So, my big vacation was driving five hours to Corning, New York to visit the Corning Glass Museum. Not exactly the Louvre, but to be honest, pretty beautiful stuff. And lots of it. As you’d expect in a museum dedicated to all things glass.
But then there was this:

Never seen anything like it. I thought it was a painting on glass – but it is a painting WITH glass.
It’s called Micromosaics – 1400 colored glass rods in a square inch create the illusion of a painting. Have any of you seen this sort of art. It was nothing short of breathtaking.

Is that a Banana in Your Art? | |

Artist Anna Chojnicka, aka Banana Bruiser, uses bananas as canvases to “paint” incredible realistic pictures.
She only uses a pin and a comb to mark the figures on the peel of the fruit. As the skin darkens each day more detail is added.

As it ripens, banana skin oxidizes and turns black. Bruising the skin speeds up the process, a fact that Chojnicka exploits to create these bruised banana artworks (also on Instagram). Here’s how it works:
I bruise the peel by pressing into it lightly with a blunt point. Speeding up and controlling the bruising process conjures light and shade in the image.
Over a few hours, the mark gradually goes darker until black. I start with the darkest parts of the image first, and then work my way backwards, finishing with the lightest parts last.

By managing the timing, it’s possible to make intricate images with graduating shades. There’s a short window of time when the image looks its best; I photograph the banana, and then eat it. | |

Chojnicka started the project in the early days of the pandemic while bored/delirious at home with a suspected Covid infection.
The increase in art using found objects during the pandemic is fascinating: people couldn’t spend a lot of time out of the house, so they reached for whatever they could find to express their creativity…in this case, bananas.
For those wondering, Anna says she eats every banana she doodles on, so nothing goes to waste. She also launched a fundraiser for her daily banana art to raise money for FareShare, who strive to “fight hunger and tackle food waste in the UK”.

This image is the mailing wrapper from when jeweler Harry Winston sent the Hope Diamond (currently valued at $200-350 million) to the Smithsonian through the regular US Mail. Read that again.
Mailed on the morning of November 8, 1958 from New York City, the item was sent by registered (first class) mail — considered the safest means of transport for valuables at that time.
The total fee was $145.29 (see the meter machine tapes). Postage only amounted to $2.44 for the package which weighed 61 ounces. The remainder of the fee ($142.85) paid for an indemnity of about $1 million.

The Greatest Films of All Time - What? | |
Since 1952, Sight and Sound has been asking critics and other folks in the film world what the greatest films of all time are. For decades, Citizen Kane was in the top slot and therefore occupied this seemingly unassailable position in western culture as the greatest film ever made. Then in 2012, Kane was unseated by Vertigo. | |
