"This Just In..."

For years the Daniels family has worked hard for you. Rushing out when you have no heat. Installing that a/c seconds before the heat wave hits. And let’s not forget that last minute propane delivery. But this winter – they – went – one step further!

We are not at liberty to provide specifics (this is the kind of top-secret stuff you find in an x-VP’s house or garage) but since Nov. 1 through the end of January, David and John managed to increase the average daily temperature by nearly 6 degrees off normal. Really. That translates to far less oil and propane usage – even though that is exactly what they sell!

With our tongue firmly planted in our cheek, we wish you a warmer than normal February and thanks for reading and playing along with us at “This Just In…”

That’s Peter Freuchen and his wife Dagmar Freuchen-Gale, in a photo taken by Irving Penn.

Freuchen is a top candidate for the Most Interesting Man in the World. Standing six feet seven inches, Freuchen was an arctic explorer, journalist, author, and anthropologist. He participated in several arctic journeys (including a 1,000-mile dogsled trip across Greenland), starred in an Oscar-winning film, wrote more than a dozen books (novels and nonfiction, including his famous book on Eskimos), had a peg leg (he lost his leg to frostbite in 1926; he amputated his gangrenous toes himself), was involved in the Danish resistance against Germany, was imprisoned and sentenced to death by the Nazis before escaping to Sweden, studied to be a doctor at university. Oh there’s more.

His first wife was Inuit and his second was a Danish margarine heiress, he became friends with Jean Harlow and Mae West, once escaped from a blizzard shelter by cutting his way out of it with a knife fashioned from his own feces, (sorry) and, last but certainly not least, won $64,000 on The $64,000 Question.

An anecdote about Freuchen:

It was so cold that even inside his cabin, even with the small coal stove, the moisture in his breath condensed into ice on the walls and ceiling. He kept breathing. The house got smaller and smaller. Early on, he wrote, two men could not pass without brushing elbows.

Eventually after he was alone and the coal — “the one factor that had kept the house from growing in upon me” — was gone, he threw out the stove to make more room inside. (He still had a spirit lamp for light and boiling water.) Before winter and his task ended and relief came, he was living inside an ice cave made of his own breath that hardly left him room to stretch out to sleep.

Peter Freuchen, six foot seven, lived inside the cave of his breath.

Come on!

His third wife, Dagmar Freuchen-Gale, was no slouch either. She was a teacher, artist, editor, expert on world cuisine, and a top fashion illustrator. Here’s a cover she illustrated for Vogue in 1947:

Boldin’s Lady in Rose

Giovanni Boldini (31 December 1842 – 11 January 1931) was an Italian genre and portrait painter who lived and worked in Paris for most of his career.

Boldini was born in Ferrara, Italy, the son of a painter of religious subjects, and the younger brother of architect Luigi Boldini. In 1862, he went to Florence for six years to study and pursue painting. He only infrequently attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts, but in Florence, met other realist painters known as The Macchiaioli, who were Italian precursors to Impressionism.

Moving to London, Boldini attained success as a portraitist. He completed portraits of distinguished members of society including Lady Holland and the Duchess of Westminster. From 1872 he lived in Paris, where he became a friend of Edgar Degas. He became the most fashionable portrait painter in Paris in the late 19th century, with a brio reminiscent of the work of John Singer Sargent and Paul Helleu.

That is the first reaction people have when someone says, “your underground oil line is leaking.” Other words follow.

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News

It is imperative that you know if your underground oil feeder lines have been either removed or cannot be accessed/used because copper corrodes and should the line fail, you could find fuel oil where you don’t want to find fuel oil. And – worse – the damage usually isn’t covered by insurance! Arrrgghhh.

The Literary Quiz

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News

Found this on the bottom of a Bazooka Bubblegum comic.

A closing oration in the final scene of a Shakespeare play (that need not be identified here) includes these laudatory words:

This was the noblest Roman of them all...

His life was gentle, and the elements

So mixed in him that Nature might stand up

And say to all the world, “This was a man.”

To whom was the speaker referring?

a) Marcus Brutus

b) Julius Augustus Caesar

c) Marc Antony

I love you more than a duck can swim,

I love you more than a gin rummy is a bore,

I love you more than a wasp can sting,

I love you as much as a beggar needs a crutch,
