Aurora Water-wise Garden promotes efficient water use through events and education

Located at the corner of Alameda Parkway and Chambers Road, the Aurora Water-wise Garden is a vibrant oasis showcasing more than 200 species of low-water plants. Open daily from dawn to dusk, this botanical site demonstrates the lush possibilities of water-wise landscaping.

The garden's mission is to advocate for efficient water use in Aurora through education, demonstrations and experimentation. With six acres to explore, visitors can learn about water-wise landscaping principles through informative signage and plant labels.

Pay a visit to the garden at these upcoming events:

  • The Inaugural Water-wise Day Expo will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18. Learn from local professionals about water efficiency programs and services, and don’t miss out on your chance to win exciting giveaways.
  • Coffee with Conservation will take place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 8, July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14 to answer your questions on all things water conservation. Free coffee will be provided as we talk about water-wise landscaping, irrigation, and touring the garden. Bring your curious mind and your favorite coffee mug.

Volunteers are crucial to the garden's success, contributing to pollinator counts, seed harvesting, and general maintenance. Explore volunteer opportunities and get involved.

Aurora Water's conservation team also offers a range of educational classes, covering topics from water-wise landscapes to drip irrigation systems.

Panhandling sign

"Give Real Change" campaign supports those in need

The “Give Real Change” campaign, which stems from a 2022 City Council-approved resolution sponsored by Council Members Angela Lawson and Steve Sundberg, has garnered support from Aurora residents and visitors. The campaign has raised over $3,000 to support Aurora homelessness programs.

The campaign aims to curb panhandling and encourages donations to Spirit of Aurora—a well-established nonprofit that supports various city and local community programs—rather than giving directly to individuals soliciting money. This ensures that funds are used effectively to promote long-term change and self-sufficiency among those in need.

Campaign signs are prominently displayed at busy intersections around Aurora, serving as a reminder of the community’s commitment to providing meaningful support to those in need. The funds raised through the “Give Real Change” campaign support Aurora’s homelessness programs, providing essential needs such as bus tickets, food and water through the city’s outreach team. Additionally, the funds help cover the costs of obtaining vital documents like IDs and birth certificates, which are often barriers to accessing services and employment.

To learn more about panhandling and how you can support those in need, visit GiveRealChange.org. Questions? Email communications@auroragov.org.
