Summer is in full swing and I hope that you have been able to or plan to take time to get away for some summer fun with you friends and family.
I just returned from a summer trip with my family, but before we did so, I was able to participate in a couple of exciting events for TTA.
Hal Dowland from PrePass and myself had the pleasure of presenting the donation to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital from the East Tennessee Big Rigs for Little Kids golf outing. It made us both proud that we are able to present them with our largest amount to date at just under $10,000! Thank you to all the TTA members and associates that participated and help make a difference in so many children’s lives.
I also had the privilege of participating in the annual TTA Call on Washington. Donna and the staff at the American Trucking Association did an excellent job scheduling meetings with our members of the Senate and Congress and gave us the opportunity to tell our story, voice our concerns and ask for their help. It’s imperative that we are engaged with our politicians so they can understand the impact legislation, regulation, and fiscal policy can have on our industry
I would like to point out one aspect of the Call on Washington that I was most excited about is that about half of our group were members of the Young Professionals Council of the TTA. It was great to spend time together with all of them and I’m so impressed with everyone I meet from the YPC. If the young professionals in your organization aren’t involved, they are missing out! We are working on plans to have a YPC event in East Tennessee soon so be on the lookout for more info so you can become a part of this great group.
Enjoy your July, thank you and stay safe out there!

KNOXVILLE ROADSIDE INSPECTION
|
|
On June 15th, we visited the Knoxville Scales for our roadside inspection and had a great turnout with 68 attendees, 29 of those being rookies! Thank you to everyone who participated and to P&S Transportation for sponsoring lunch. We hope you all can join us for our Brownsville Roadside on July 15!

We made our Call on Washington June 16th, 2022. We had 12 in attendance for the call, which included Tommy Hodges, Titan Transfer, Inc., Jeff Reed, Skyline Transportation, Inc., Connie Vaughan, Perry Wilson, Matt Neary, all with McKee Foods Transportation, LLC, Ruby McBride, Colonial Freight Systems, Inc., Debra Brake and Jessie Merritt, Reliance Partners, LLC, Joe Fischer, Eaton Corporation, Patrick Mendenhall, Rush Truck Center, Nashville, and Caleb Vance, Penske Truck Leasing. Tommy Hodges commented that this was one of the most organized calls we have ever had.
The ATA did a wonderful job of coordinating our visit. Henry O. Hanscom, Vice President of Legislative Affairs,
American Trucking Associations, escorted our group. We were able to meet with the majority of the Tennessee Delegation where we advocated for more infrastructure funding, truck parking, workforce initiatives, and driver shortage.
One outcome from our meeting with Senator Blackburn was that they have cosponsored the LICENCE act, and are looking at the other bills we raised, and the possibility of leading on them.
For reference, the License Act makes permeant three CDL-related waivers that were made during the COVID crisis. The bill provides State and third-party CDL examiners the ability to administer the CDL skills and knowledge tests, allows a CDL holder accompanying a permit holder to be present anywhere in the cab of the vehicle when operated by the permit holder, and permits a State to administer a driving skills tests to any applicant, regardless of the applicant’s state of domicile or where the applicant received driver training.
William H. Reed, Jr. Memorial Call on Washington Travel Grant
This year, the executive committee voted to award two William H Reed, Jr. Memorial Call on Washington travel grants. We are excited to announce that they were awarded to Patrick Mendenhall, Rush Truck Center, Nashville, and Caleb Vance, Penske Truck Leasing. This grant is designed to encourage first-time participants in the annual Tennessee Trucking Association Call on Washington event that Bill enthusiastically supported for over a decade.
The grant covered expenses related to travel, lodging, and meals for selected individuals. Eligible recipients were chosen from existing members of the Young Professionals Council.
Thank you to Skyline Transportation, Inc. for sponsoring the grant this year.

BROWNSVILLE ROADSIDE INSPECTION
|
|
You are invited to participate in the Brownsville Roadside Inspection will be conducted by the Tennessee Trucking Association in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Safety on Friday, July 15th, at the Brownsville Scales on Interstate 40, mile marker 50 .
Participants will divide into teams and a State Trooper will be assigned to lead each team. Teams work with the troopers as they pull vehicles in for inspections. Level I, II and III inspections will be conducted. It is the best educational experience a company can have regarding how roadside inspections are conducted. You will see what might prompt a vehicle to be pulled in, what determines the level of inspection to be performed, and what is expected when paperwork and equipment is checked. It begins at 8:00 am Central Time and concludes around 2:30 pm or 3:00 pm with a summary of the inspections conducted throughout the day.

INSPECTORS PLACE MORE THAN 1,200 COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLES WITH BRAKE VIOLATIONS OUT OF SERVICE DURING CVSA’S UNANNOUNCED BRAKE SAFETY DAY
|
|
On April 27, 46 jurisdictions in Canada and the U.S. removed 1,290 commercial motor vehicles with brake-related critical vehicle inspection item violations from Canadian and American roadways. That’s 14.1% of the 9,132 commercial motor vehicles inspected that day.
This unannounced one-day inspection and enforcement initiative, conducted by members of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), focuses specifically on the brake systems and components on commercial motor vehicles. On Brake Safety Day, CVSA-certified inspectors conduct their usual commercial motor vehicle inspections; however, in addition, for this initiative, they also reported brake-related data to the Alliance.

CALIFORNIA TRUCKING PREPARES FOR AB5: SUPREME COURT WON'T HEAR APPEAL
|
|
California’s AB5 law severely restricting the use of independent contractors will soon be enforced against the trucking industry after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the California Trucking Association’s appeal.
In an end-of-term orders list released June 30, the Supreme Court denied review of the 9th Circuit’s reversal of the injunction against enforcement of California’s AB 5 against the trucking industry. As a result, an injunction that has been in place for roughly two years will be lifted quickly and complying with AB5 will be a reality for trucking companies in California, according to the transportation attorneys at Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary.
“I don’t think it’s a complete surprise,” Scopelitis partner Greg Feary told HDT in an interview. “We think it shouldn’t have been denied, there was a deep split in the circuits, and the issue of federal pre-emption deserved more guidance that the court could have provided.”

Summer is in full swing, and families across the nation are hitting the road for vacations, creating fuller roads with less cautious drivers. Whether you’re driving your BIG RIG cross-country, or hauling goods on a shorter route, American families will be traveling this July and August as they do every year, so it’s important to STAY ALERT. Here a few tips for trucking in the summer as you continue to work hard while others are on vacation:
- More drivers on the roads: Watch out for highways packed with drivers of all ages. Teenagers go on trips, families go on vacations, people take days off work and there are more people on the road than any other season. This creates hazardous roads for truck drivers. Stay alert for drivers who aren’t used to long road trips. Drivers can become more distracted, fatigued, or make poor choices while driving.
- Eat healthy: Fresh fruit, yogurt, and cold water are great snacks to pack with you on the road. Not only are these foods healthy but they are refreshing during the summer months.
- Stay hydrated and out of the sun: The driver’s side window heats up, and although it can feel nice there is a thing known as “Trucker’s Arm”. Truckers often get an awkward tan that occurs from a driver only getting sun to the left arm. It may be funny to look at, but as with all sun exposure, there are serious risks associated with it. Using a sun sleeve, sunscreen, window covers or just wearing long sleeves can help to protect from dangerous rays from the sun. Don’t forget to stay hydrated while driving!
- Beware of the weather: Summer weather can change drastically and give no notice. Be aware of what kind of weather is up ahead and what could be coming to the area, use apps on your phone or the local radio station to keep informed.
- Check your tires often: Under-inflated tires will wear quicker in the heat, and can be hazardous to your drive. The combination of heat and under-inflation can drastically increase the chances of a blowout, so check your tire pressure frequently.
- Be aware of heat exhaustion or heat stroke: If you feel dizzy or nauseous while driving it would be smart to pull over and rest in a safe place away from traffic. Exercising outside or driving without air conditioning in warm weather can increase your risk.
Truck drivers are delivering goods that fuel the economy, stock the shelves at local stores, and fill the pantries of every family in the United States. The trucking industry impacts the daily lives of Americans in more ways than anyone can imagine. Truck drivers are operating much larger, heavier vehicles than others they share the road with, and have a higher degree of responsiveness. It’s important to drive wise and stay extra alert during the summer months. Do it for you; Do it for your family. Enjoy the July 4th Holiday Weekend!

Dale Allen, Adams and Reese LLP
|
|
This campaign season is very busy with some active races. On June 20, 2022, TTA along with Adams and Reese hosted a fundraising dinner for Senator Jack Johnson from Williamson County. Jack is the current Republican Majority Leader in the Senate and longtime supporter of the trucking industry. He has a well-funded primary opponent that has caused Jack to have to defend his pro-business record since being in the legislature. The event on June 20th was a major success and we couldn’t have sponsored the event without the support of members of TTA and the contributions made to TRUCK PAC. Also, the individual support of Gary Sasser, Tommy Hodges, Scott George, JB Baker, Connie Vaughn, and Jack McKee made the event a major success. TTA will be hosting a similar event this fall for House Commerce Chairman Kevin Vaughn of West Tennessee. Please continue to support TRUCK PAC with your contributions and support.
