The expanding role of prescribing buprenorphine to treat pain in addition to treating Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
Most providers know that buprenorphine has been a Medication to treat Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) since 2002. It was originally approved in 1981 for purposes related to anesthesia-related pain control. Since the MATE Act was passed in December 2022, more attention has been paid to using buprenorphine to treat both chronic pain as well as OUD.

Congratulations to MOA President Emily Hurst, DO!

The MOA House of Delegates met on April 27, 2024 in a hybrid meeting allowing delegates to attend with either in-person or online option. Among the many actions the delegates addressed was the installment of Emily Hurst, DO, as the incoming MOA President.

Dr. Hurst addressed the delegates with an overview of her plans for her 2024-25 term, including connecting with each component society across the state. In her comments she also mentioned

“I can’t express how honored I am to be standing here today, accepting the role of Michigan Osteopathic Association President for the coming year, exactly 20 years to the day, I came to Michigan and started searching for a place to live. I had contacted the MOA prior to moving here and was able to immediately start participating in MOA activities…” said Dr. Hurst.

The MOA has become accustom to Dr. Hurst representing the association and is now looking forward to working with Dr. Hurst on her presidential goals. Congratulations!
