Do you choose the road everyone's taken, or the path that's best for you?

The last couple of newsletters have been focused on increasing self-awareness. Research continues to show that as we increase our self-awareness and manage our responses more effectively, we create leaders worth following. Once we have leaders worth following, they need great strategies to be successful.

I highly recommend The Road Less Traveled. It was one of my first self-awareness books and took some time to read as there is a lot to process. Author Scott Peck examines our tendency to live on autopilot, without much self-reflection, in order to avoid pain and difficulty. The process of confronting and solving problems makes life difficult, Peck explains, yet it's precisely the process of meeting and solving problems that gives life meaning and helps us reach a higher level of self-understanding. See the connection to strategic planning, addressing strategic issues and having a defined purpose!

One of my favorite parts of the book is "Openness to Challenge," which resulted in the core value, "Feedback is a Gift." This was life changing for me and it's why we are doing our upcoming learning forum (see below). A dedication to feedback because we "deeply care" and the balance of the person being "open to feedback" is critical for feedback to be seen as a gift or not.
