Office of the President

Dear William Paterson Faculty and Staff,

Over the summer, many of you have no doubt noticed an ongoing project on Speert Green, in front of Grant Hall, and wondered what is taking shape. I am pleased to share the exciting news that the answer is being revealed today as a large new monument that will place our ‘WP’ logo at the heart of campus.

Given the lack of a traditional gateway or entrance to campus, the large new ‘WP’ will quickly become a focal point on campus, a natural gathering spot, directional reference point, and – importantly for campus tours and alumni visits – an instant backdrop for selfie highlights of their campus experience. This will enhance both the recruitment process and our alumni engagement efforts.

The monument’s platform will pay homage to the rock that was a feature of campus life for much of the institution’s early history here on our Wayne campus. ‘The Rock’ was a popular meeting place on campus, and “I’ll meet you at the Rock,” is a phrase that is warmly remembered by many of our alumni. Its legacy will be recalled in one of two plaques that will be part of the monument. The second plaque will note that the ‘WP’ is being installed thanks in part to the support of a generous gift provided specifically for campus beautification from the estate of the late Edward Skurna ’61, MA ’69, a member of the Heritage Society.

The new campus feature will be formally dedicated as part of Homecoming festivities on Saturday, November 9, and it will feature in next month’s Welcome Day activities, as well as campus tours and Senior Send Off. If your daily campus routine doesn’t already take you past Speert Green, I encourage you to make a special point of seeing it. It is yet another expression of William Paterson’s role as a “Powerhouse of Progress.”

Thanks to Vice President of Administration and Finance Kirsten Loewrigkeit and Associate Vice President for Administration Kevin Garvey and his team for overseeing the acquisition and installation of the ‘WP’ and to Vice President Stuart Goldstein and his Marketing and Public Relations team and Vice President Pam Ferguson and her Institutional Advancement team for their roles in planning and bringing to fruition this wonderful new symbol of our collective WP pride.

I look forward to ‘meeting you at the WP!’

Sincerely,

Richard J. Helldobler, Ph.D.
