Dear Friends,
I'm writing to let you know that I've made the difficult decision to leave my position at the Chicago Debate Commission as of June 30, 2018, completing almost seven years as Executive Director. Beginning in July, I will pursue a new opportunity to have an impact on our community as a consultant to nonprofits.
Serving Chicago students through the uniquely empowering activity of debate has been the most meaningful work of my life. I have seen stereotypes shattered, heard voices that deserve to be heard, and met students full of potential who are using debate to become extraordinary leaders. I will be forever grateful to the Chicago Debate Commission Board for giving me the opportunity to provide these students with the platform to achieve their potential.
This is a great time for a transition. The Chicago Debate Commission is in the strongest position it has ever been - with an amazing staff, a thoughtful and active Board, an enthusiastic Associates Board, a commitment to debate from Chicago Public Schools, and a dedicated - and growing - community of supporters. I have full confidence that new leadership will not only sustain our tremendous impact but will also drive even greater progress for our students.
The Board of the CDC has established a hiring community and retained Alford Executive Search to conduct a search for the organization's next Executive Director. You can find the
Opportunity Guide here. Feel free to forward it to potential candidates.
I want to thank all of you in the debate community for your passion, your time, your support and your commitment to the young leaders who debate in our program. Together, we are transforming our world for the better.
Warmly,
Edie Canter
Executive Director
