National Nurses Week is May 6-12, 2024. We are excited to celebrate Nurses Week with all of you next week! The theme for this year is "Nurses Make the Difference," spotlighting the diverse roles of nurses and our positive impact on the lives of our patients. Each day during Nurses Week, ANAC will feature a book that highlights a special aspect of nursing. We hope you enjoy this approach and find a new book to read.
For the third year in a row, we will launch the ANAC Conference Scholarship Drive during Nurses Week. All donations during May will go towards supporting scholarships to the ANAC conference. Look out for more info next week about how to show your support!

- The Conference Committee has selected the theme for the Gala, "Drag Race," aligning ANAC’s inclusive culture and colorful and creative side with the host city’s connection to racing. Get ready for the Drag Race and get those costumes going!
- We are excited to announce our opening speaker Sarah DiGregorio. She is the author of the inspiring book Taking Care: The Story of Nursing and Its Power to Change Our World.
- Abstracts have closed with a record number of submissions. The selection process, led by the Research Committee, has begun.
This promises to be a conference filled with evidence-based content, inspiring speakers and fun!
National Latinx Conference
Membership Manager Nakera Dumas and DEI Co-Chair Michele Crespo-Fierro will attend the NaLa Conference May 2-4 in El Paso to represent ANAC, exchange ideas and engage with nurses and other healthcare professionals that serve LatinX communities. They will be at Booth 11! Will you be attending or have colleagues attending?

The White House announces new ONAP director
ANAC congratulates and welcomes Francisco Ruiz as the new Director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP). Mr. Ruiz is the first Latino serving as ONAP Director and brings extensive experience working with community-based organizations as well as organizations and government agencies at all levels.
PACHA March meeting
The Presidents Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) met in Houston March 26-28 as part of the "PACHA to the People" meetings that are held in communities across the U.S. The meeting examined the needs of Black and Latina cisgender women and Hispanic/LatinX and rural communities in ending the HIV epidemic. Nurses were well represented in this meeting. ANAC member Cordella Lyon, an invited panelist, described the critical role of safety-net hospitals in rural communities and ANAC members Jason Farley, Sheryl Malone-Thomas, Emily Barr, Evelyn Hicks, Robin Hardwicke, Diana Santamaria and Veronica Brady provided public comments..
ANAC attends policy meeting
The HIV Policy Project at the O’Neill Institute/Georgetown Law hosted a convening titled “Integrating HIV and Aging Services to Increase Quality of Life”. ANAC staff Sheila Tumilty and board member Bridgette Picou joined ONAP Director Francisco Ruiz and other community and organizational leaders working to improve care for those living and aging with HIV to strategize on policy recommendations to support better quality of life.

University of Washington launches National HIV PrEP Curriculum
The University of Washington has launched The National HIV PrEP Curriculum. It is a free, up-to-date educational resource for health care professionals to learn how to initiate and manage HIV PrEP, supported by the CDC and HRSA. The website offers 14 free CME, CNE, CE and 10 free pharmacology CE for advanced practice nurses.

ANAC attends ASA
ANAC member David Vance, a member of the ANAC HIV & Aging Expert Advisory Committee and ANAC staff Sheila Tumilty joined with other Gilead HIV & Aging grantees to attend the American Society on Aging (ASA) 2024 Conference in San Francisco in March. It is the nation’s largest multidisciplinary conference on aging, and this year with Gilead’s support, increased awareness of HIV and aging issues through sessions and a plenary to a large audience.

AIDS 2024
ANAC will host a Nursing Networking Zone at AIDS 2024, the International AIDS Conference, in Munich, Germany in July. This collaborative effort between nursing organizations and individual nurses from around the globe will be a space to connect, share experiences and learn from each other. PEPFAR launches Nursing Leadership Initiative
Ambassador John Nkengasong, Director of PEPFAR, launched the PEPFAR Nursing Leadership Initiative in seven PEPFAR countries to support nursing leadership in the global response to HIV/AIDS in March. This innovative initiative will be implemented in partnership with national nursing organizations and nursing leaders in-country to strengthen the country's nursing workforce. It is coordinated by nurses from CDC and USAID who participate in PEPFAR projects (and are ANAC members!). ANAC will be offering memberships and other supports as part of an expanded global membership campaign.

Carol Dawson-Rose named Dean
ANAC Past President, Carol Dawson-Rose, PhD, RN, FAAN, is now the new dean of the UCSF School of Nursing and associate vice chancellor for Nursing Affairs!
As dean, she will oversee the school’s evolution as it addresses important challenges in its field, including diversifying and building new programs and pathways to train the next generation of nurse leaders. We are thrilled to congratulate her on this important milestone.
ANAC welcomes new NCPD/CNE Director
ANAC welcomes Mary Smith, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, as ANAC’s new NCPD Director. With 26 years of nursing experience and extensive knowledge of nursing continuing professional development (NCPD), Mary will provide oversight of NCPD efforts. Julie Schexnayder, PhD, CRNP, has moved on from this role to expanded clinical and research roles at UAB, and remains co-chair of the ANAC Research Committee. We thank Julie for her commitment to ANAC and nursing professional development.
Global Award winner authors new book
Shout out to ANAC member, Maureen Akolo, PhD, RN, co-author of a recently released book "History of HIV and AIDS in Kenya: Evolution and Contemporary Issues". Written with co-authors from Aga Khan University's School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa, it delves into the past achievements and ongoing challenges in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Kenya. The book offers insights into the reflections and narratives on HIV from frontline healthcare workers and community leaders.
Hope Center's Gift honors ANAC member Brittney Turner
The Hope Center, a part of St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Bronx, NY, made a generous donation to ANAC in memory of their beloved colleague Brittney Turner. For more than fourteen years, Brittney's dedication to caring for individuals living with HIV and HepC illuminated the halls of St. John's Riverside Hospital, where she served as Head Nurse. We are very grateful for this gift and will honor Brittney's legacy in providing compassionate care through a scholarship to ANAC2024.

Student Network Group in need of ANAC member leaders!
ANAC Membership Manager, Nakera Dumas, has been leading and facilitating student network meetings over the last few months. We are looking for ANAC members from all disciplines and backgrounds to co-lead future sessions with us. Generally, these meetings occur on the last Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. ET, and there are a few breakout rooms based on interest. Interests typically include prevention, community health, global and research. If you are interested in donating some of your time and expertise, please reach out to Nakera!
DEI Committee news
In mid-May, the DEI Comittee will release a call for applications to participate in a
a multi-pronged learning and action initiative for nurses and other members of the healthcare team to understand the impact of racism in healthcare in the United States and to develop action steps to become anti-racist and allies in racial equity in HIV and healthcare. Watch for more information soon!

Richard L. Sowell JANAC Awards
Article of the Year 2023
Margaret Erickson, PhD, received the Richard L. Sowell JANAC Awards Article of the Year in 2023 for her work “Pathways From Recent Incarceration to Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence: Opportunities for Interventions to Support Women Living With HIV Post Release From Correctional Facilities”.
Dr. Erickson is a public health researcher based in Vancouver, Canada. Her work is focused on the intersections of health and justice, and has involved research relating to HIV, HCV, substance use and reproductive and sexual health. Margaret values applied and policy relevant research that centers the voices and expertise of those most impacted.
