Resource of the Month

World Ocean Month

Think Globally, Act Locally

Conserving special places in our coastal and marine environment is a great way to balance the often competing and occasionally conflicting demands of coastal resource use, economic development, and conservation. Programs such as NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries and the National Estuarine Research Reserve System enable communities to come together to study, discuss, and find solutions to a broad range of pressing problems in specific regions around the nation. These special places are focal points that encourage partnerships in science, education, technology, management, and community.

Locally, we have the Grand Bay NERR https://grandbaynerr.org/  and the Weeks Bay NERR https://www.outdooralabama.com/lands/weeks-bay-reserve

SFP Library Assistants

Mackenzie Loyd

I'm a student at The University of Southern Mississippi on the Hattiesburg campus where I study marine biology with a minor in chemistry. My favorite hobbies include reading, listening to music, and hanging out with my friends. I'm so excited to be here at GCRL learning new things and meeting new people every day!

Caroline Morris

My name is Caroline Morris, and I am a Marine Science major at Southern Miss. I plan to pursue a career in marine conservation. In my free time, I love to hang out with my friends, read, and go to the beach. I am so excited to be a part of the Summer Field Program this summer, and I can not wait to go on fun field trips and learn more about oceanography!

New Books!

A guide through the dos and don’ts of writing a PhD. It provides practical guidance to getting started all the way through the writing and editing process. Examples are tailored to the biological sciences, offering a unique reference for PhD students in these disciplines.

Completion of postgraduate studies, especially PhD, and career advancement in academia strongly depend on the ability to publish scientific papers or books and attract research grants.

The third edition of Scientific Papers and Presentations applies traditional principles to today's modern techniques and the changing needs of up-and-coming academia. Topics include designing visual aids, writing first drafts, reviewing and revising, communicating clearly and concisely, adhering to stylistic principles, presenting data in tables and figures, dealing with ethical and legal issues, and relating science to the lay audience.

This anniversary issue celebrates the series by highlighting some of the very important early work in the field that was published in the Series. In particular, this issue (re)introduces new researchers to this research that has stood the test of time and that shaped the field.

This serial updates on a variety of topics that will appeal to postgraduates and researchers in marine biology, fisheries science, ecology, zoology and biological oceanography.

The third edition of The Diversity of Fishes is a major revision of the widely adopted ichthyology textbook, incorporating the latest advances in the biology of fishes and covering taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, biogeography, ecology, and behavior.

A lifelong acolyte of the natural world, Annie Proulx brings her witness and research to the subject of wetlands and the vitally important role they play in preserving the environment—by storing the carbon emissions that accelerate climate change.

The CSE ManualScientific Style and Format for Authors, Editors, and Publishers delivers complete coverage of rules and best practices in scientific publishing.

Eaglet Food Pantry Receives Donations

On June 4th, OSML Branch Manager Jim Thompson and Library staff member Michelle McCartney delivered four boxes of donated food to Gunter Library.

The Eaglet Food Pantry at Gunter Library received several generous donations in June. Ocean Springs Municipal Library (OSML) donated four boxes of non-perishable food; GCRL retiree John Ogle delivered a bag of Chunky Bowls ®. The Gunter Library Eaglet Food pantry opened in September 2022 and is grateful for those who use the pantry and those who donate!

SAIL / Cyamus Annual Conference

From May 21-May 24, members of two International Association of Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC) https://iamslic.wildapricot.org/ regional affiliate groups—SAIL, which includes the southeastern U.S. Gulf Coast, the Atlantic Coast of North America–including central and eastern Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas, Caribbean, eastern Mexico, and Panama, and westward to the Mississippi River; and Cyamus, the regional group that encompasses the West Coast of North America and Hawaii, including Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Baja California, and eastward to the Mississippi River, met in person and virtually at the SAIL/Cyamus Joint Annual Conference hosted by the Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL). These two regional IAMSLIC groups gathered for education and fellowship marking the first time they met, separately or together in person, since the IASMLIC annual conference hosted by SAILer Liz DeHart in October 2019 in Port Aransas, TX. This was a solid first step back into the world of meeting in person again!
