Summer Days: Building Rhythm and Routine for Kids with ADHD

School’s out, and it’s summer! The kids are excited, teachers are relieved, and parents are starting to feel a familiar knot in their stomachs about the change of routine for their kids in summer – especially parents dealing with ADHD kids. Somewhere out there, there are parents who are thinking, “Now what? What do I do with my energetic, mile-a-minute, often scattered kid, all day, every day for the next ten weeks?”

It can seem overwhelming and often daunting. But know you are not alone! Let’s look at how you can pay attention to your kids’ natural rhythm and routine to relieve some stress.

Staff Summer Kick-Off

The CanLearn team got together on June 28th for safety training on mental health, first aid and emergency to kick-off the summer!

A huge thank you to Heidi Grogan from Calgary Learns for leading such an engaging and insightful Psychological First Aid Training session.

Spring/Summer Program Highlights

WordPlay Summer Camp

Camp WordPlay online is a five day program filled with stories, games and fun activities! We focus on building phonemic awareness and decoding skills through the Science of Reading approach.  


When:  Monday, July 24th to Friday, July 28th. 

Sessions run daily from 10:00 am to Noon.

Where: ZOOM


If you have a child in grade one or two who is struggling to read, this camp is for them. For more information or to register, please contact Sandy at 403-701-1660 or 


Friends Program Summer Groups

Summer Camps for children ages 9-12 will be run throughout the summer. The camps will focus on building social and emotional skills through games, discussion, and engaging activities. Free for city of Calgary residents. 


Camp 1 dates: July 3 - July 7

Camp 2 dates: July 10 - July 14

Camp 3 dates: August 14 - August 18

CanLearn is offering free virtual or in-person workshops that help your students thrive with their learning differences! These workshops are for schools and groups within the City of Calgary and are available for a limited time.

Mental Health Support and Resources

In recognition of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, CanLearn’s counselling team can help navigate challenges and support mental well-being. We work with individuals (aged 6 through adult) and families to address anxiety, mood, behaviour challenges, social stress, relationship issues and emotional dysregulation.

Calgary Moms Concerned About Lack of Special Needs Support in Alberta’s Education System - Disability Pride Month

These three Moms feel let down...frustrated by the lack of support and resources, but ultimately, very worried for their children's futures.

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity to advocate for better mental health access, resources, safe spaces and elimination of discrimination in Alberta schools and workplaces for the LGBTQ2S+ community.

Factors that Contribute to the Mental Health of Black Youth in Alberta - National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month 

Research into Black youth's mental health in Alberta found that anti-Black racism and intergenerational tensions are major factors that contribute to their mental health. This research study suggests a need to address anti-Black racism and ensure more equitable approaches for Black youth in Alberta.

Canada Day Family Activities Around Calgary

The City of Calgary's free and family-friendly celebration features an Indigenous showcase and powwow, live music, and will end with a fireworks show above Stampede Park. Other attractions throughout the day include cultural performances, face painting, turban tying, lion dances, a street fair and more.
