National Indigenous History Month Blog from Calgary Learns

June is Indigenous Awareness month. It is a time for all Canadians (Indigenous, non-Indigenous and newcomers) to reflect upon and learn the history, sacrifices, cultures, contributions, and strength of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people. Read Calgary Learns' blog to see how you can get involved in community events and learn more on how Indigenous History Month came to be.

Learning the Circle Way

Read Nada's experience with the Indigenous Learning Circle as they engaged adult foundational learning practitioners to explore the historical issues shaping the experience of Indigenous learners - opening hearts, learning and connecting. Thank you to Calgary Learns and Lisa L’Hirondelle for leading this experience!

Happy Pride Month!

CanLearn's mission is to unlock potential so ALL can learn. We are committed to having an inclusive culture that makes our programs and services accessible for everyone - no matter your sexual orientation, gender identity or expressions.

Gender Diversity and Neurodiversity

There is some research that suggests that people with ADHD or Autism or both may be more likely to question their gender.

It’s not uncommon to work with clients who are going through this realization, and part of that comes from their different perspectives on their world or the world around them. It can also come from various other reasons, and can lead to the realization that many expectations placed on them are arbitrary, leading to a search for systems and behaviours that better support them and their needs.

For some people with ADHD, this can include how they navigate and present their gender. But it can also be a natural process to explore their gender identity along with other aspects of their identity especially if ADHD or Autism is in the mix. Having a safe support system is so important - we've included some helpful resources below to better understand how to support the neurodivergent LGBTQIA+ community.

Men's Mental Health Awareness - How ADHD Impacts Mental Health in Men

Did you know? ADHD impacts different genders in unique and significant ways. Men with ADHD may be more quick to anger and prone to outbursts at real or perceived threats. They may also be less likely to advance in their careers than neurotypical men, and can feel shame and embarrassment because of this.

In the Let's Talk ADHD Group, men and other adults with ADHD can learn strategies to improve executive functioning, handle stress and create healthy habits. Participants can connect with other adults facing similar challenges while getting support from a Registered Psychologist who understands the unique needs of adults with ADHD.
