September 2022 Newsletter

What an amazing summer of flying at the Princeton Airport. While we did have some hot days in August, we were lucky enough to also have some cool days and cool nights! We had a few nights where there were 4+ planes in the air, where students were doing night training.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the summer BBQ! Jack and Gabrielle Nierenberg, pictured above, took turns on the grill. Ok, it was mainly Jack and Ken on the grill. It was fun to share some pilot stories and catch up. We are hoping to have the new self serve fuel set up in the next week or so...stay tuned. With the end of summer comes shorter days. Be aware that the sun is setting 45 minutes earlier than in June. We are looking to add a new flight coordinator to our team, please share with anyone you think may be interested.

Summer BBQ FUN

We had quite a turnout at our summer BBQ. Studnts, pilots, family members and friends all joined the Princeton Aiport and shared in hamburgers and hotdogs.

In just a few short hours we went through over 65 hamburgers and 80 hot dogs! Special shout out to Ken and Jack on the grill.   We can all agree it was a highlight of the summer. Looking forward to having the community at 39N gather again

Cross Country on Labor Day

Whenever I plan a cross country flight, I start looking at the weather several days before the trip. I look at the long-range forecasts and consult the briefer on the current view on what the weather will do at both my destination and departure airports.

Several years ago, I had followed this planning procedure for a flight to Saranac Lake, New York. SLK is northwest of Lake Placid, just north of the “High Peaks” area of the Adirondack Mountains. It is well known for changeable weather conditions that can upset plans. The long Labor Day weekend was enjoyed by the whole family with abundant sunshine and light winds. I called the flight service station at Burlington to get a weather outlook the evening before my return home looking forward to an easy flight back to Princeton. The briefer calmly described the front that was approaching and opined that I may not be able to get out of Saranac Lake the next day. He suggested that we talk again about the next two to three days of rain and low ceilings. My wife had to get back for the new school year’s teaching and everyone else, except for my retired in-laws, planned to depart in the morning.

Don Denny, President

Next PAFT Meeting Wednesday, September 14th @ 6:30 pm

Sadly, the summer draws to an end, but on the bright side, PAFT monthly meetings resume. Our next meeting is on September 14th and features Mark Mizrahi of Flysimulators speaking on GA flight simulators. We will once again conduct the meeting on Zoom. Social time and the business meeting start at 6:30 pm while the speaker starts at 7 pm.

Our October 12th meeting will feature Paul Deres, Senior Director, AOPA Air Safety Institute, who will present an accident analysis for discussion.

When should we have a dinner out? We need a volunteer to choose a site and make arrangements. I suggest we have an in-person meeting for our November meeting.

Email me if you are not already on the PAFT mailing list and would like to be. The PAFT membership application form can be found at paft-nj.org

Fly safe,
