Nokia lands EUR 500m EU financing for 5G research Finnish multinational telecommunications, IT, software and services company Nokia signed a EUR 500m loan transaction with the European Investment Bank (EIB), supported by the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI). First-of-its-kind petrol and diesel car ban launched in London A pioneering scheme which bans all petrol and diesel cars from roads from roads in London has begun as part of the UK’s first "ultra-low emissions zone”. Only electric cars and the newest hybrids will be allowed to access the streets during morning and evening rush hour periods. Read more

2019 Energy and Transport calls open On 05 Sept 2018 the Horizon 2020 transport and energy calls concerning 2019 were opened. The EC allocated €122m for Transport and over €300m for Energy topics. Deadlines start on 11 Dec 2018 for Energy projects and 16 Jan 2019 for the 1st Stage of Transport projects. Read more about Transport calls and Energy calls

Green number plates for clean vehicles The special plates, which are already used by countries like Norway, Canada and China, could be available on green vehicles like electric and hydrogen cars in the UK and are thought to encourage take-up among drivers. The plan of a forthcoming UK government consultation announced on 09 Sept 2018 will seek views on whether green plates could work in the UK, and if so, what they should look like. Read more

Enhanced EIC pilot to be launched in 2019 The European Commission have confirmed the intention to launch an enhanced European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot initiative in 2019, following the European Council's request in July this year. The enhanced pilot will build on the proposed structure of the EIC under the Horizon Europe proposal to fast track disruptive and market-creating innovation. Read more

The issue of element scarcity cannot be stressed enough. With some 10 million smartphones being discarded or replaced every month in the European Union alone, we need to carefully look at our tendencies to waste and improperly recycle such items.
