SMUD Incentive
SMUD’ Charge@Home incentive program began on December 8 and lasts until February 28, 2022. SMUD residential customers who have purchased or leased a new or used EV may quality for up to $500 for the purchase of a Level 2 charger and up to $500 for installation by a licensed electrician.

Ford Mach-E in New York City
New York City has purchased 184 Ford Mach-E vehicles. The city will use them in their Police, Sheriff and Parks departments. The city is also planning to purchase 250 Tesla Model 3s to be used as police patrol cars.

Ford Lightning Reservation-Holders Invited to Place Orders
Ford has announced that the first wave of F150 “Lightning” reservation holders will be invited to place their orders on 1/6/22. Additional reservation holders will be invited to place their orders soon. Ford plans to make 150,000 Lightnings per year, and a total of 600,000 EVs in all their model lineup by 2023.

Nikola Delivers ZEV Trucks
Nikola has delivered their first four zero-emission trucks, two battery-electric, two fuel cell electric, to a Southern California drayage company, Total Transportation Solutions (TTS). These are the first of a 100 truck order placed by TTS.

Idle Reduction Strategies
Over 90% of fleets do not have idle reduction programs in place, based mainly on fleet managers not having sufficient information to make a case for implementing an idle reduction program; and fleet managers finding an appropriate idle reduction program. An effective idle reduction program can reduce fuel use with resulting cost, emission and GHG reductions.

GM Micro Mobility Delivery Service
GM’s logistics division, “BrightDrop”, has developed a Micro Mobility delivery service in Seattle that provides last-mile package delivery and community restaurant food delivery using electric bicycles. The program uses specially designed electric delivery “tricycles” with cargo compartments supplied by Coaster Cycles.

Chrysler EV Debut
Chrysler will debut their first BEV, the “Airflow Concept” crossover at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas January 5 - 7. The Airflow Concept will have a dual-motor drivetrain, a 400 mile range and over-the-air updates.

Tesla Recall
Tesla is recalling 475,000 Model 3 and Model S EVs with rearview camera and other issues. The NTSB is also reviewing some other issues with Tesla.

EV Insurance
Insuring a BEV costs on average 23% more than insuring an ICE due to the higher purchase price of the EV, the higher cost to repair and the potentially longer repair times (with longer loaner car periods).

DHL Autonomous Navistar Trucks
DHL has signed a contract with TuSimple to integrate autonomous technology into 100 Navistar trucks to be delivered in 2024. TuSimple now has 6,875 truck order reservations. DHL is currently running autonomous trucks daily on a regular route between San Antonio and Dallas.

Is the ICE Dead?
BEVs and FCVs are getting all the press but many OEMs as well as the government continue to invest billions in ICEs. The Army continues development of the very innovative Achates diesel that may achieve near-zero emissions without aftertreatment. Many OEMs are working on cylinder deactivation and fuel management applications, while Cummins, Volvo, Westport and BMW are all working on hydrogen ICEs. (Note: There will be enormous markets for ICEs in developing countries that have domestic access to fossil fuels.)

Access to charging infrastructure is one of the biggest barriers to plug-in vehicle adoption. Home owners with a personal garage had electrical access or potential electrical access, less than half of those with driveways/carports had electrical access and apartment residents had the least access.
