On The Galt Mile

Light Up the Galt November 17

The magic of the holiday season comes to the Galt Ocean Mile as the North Beach Restaurants and Shoppes and the City of Fort Lauderdale present an enchanted evening of live music, entertainment, food, and fun for the entire family. The November 17 event features live music, a kid’s zone, plus food and drink specials from more than 15 restaurants and bars. A tree lighting ceremony takes place at 7 pm. The event takes place from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.

Retirement of Commissioner Heather Moraitis

City Commissioner Heather Moraitis will be leaving the city commission on November 9, after representing the Galt Mile for over five years.

While addressing the Galt Mile Advisory Board meeting in October, Commissioner Moraitis stated, “Representing the Galt Ocean Mile Association for the past five years has been an honor.” I have enjoyed working with past president Pio Ieraci and current president Fred Nesbitt, along with the association boards and presidents of all condos on the Galt. Together we made many improvements to the area, including a new park and streetscape improvements to the Galt Ocean Drive, and 32nd street, and 33rd street. Heather was the commission leader to get equity for condos in water and sewer rates, realizing quickly that associations paying 60% more for water and sewage was an inequity. She was also active in getting a park at Lockhart Stadium and vocal on many city-wide issues.

“I was so touched to receive flowers at my final meeting. The white roses represent my years of service, and the pink rose represents what is next for my future. I certainly hope to represent the Galt Mile again one day.”

Galt President Fred Nesbitt wished her well in her future endeavors, and said that she is always welcome on the Galt Mile.

Smoking and vaping ban on Fort Lauderdale Beach

Smoking and vaping of any kind are banned on Fort Lauderdale Beaches. In the new ban, smoking and vaping would not be allowed on the sandy parts of the beaches as well as most state parks in Fort Lauderdale. A pleasant note for those who enjoy the occasional cigar, the ban will not apply to cigars that are unfiltered. Those in violation could receive up to a $500 fine and/or 60 days in jail.

Fort Lauderdale and other coastal cities have wanted to ban smoking at the beach for years, but were blocked from doing so by a state law that gave that power to Florida legislators alone. Cities throughout the Sunshine State can now make that call on their own thanks to a change in state law that took effect on July 1.
