Hispanic Heritage Month has arrived—let’s celebrate!

Let’s honor the significant contributions and achievements that have enriched our culture. Celebration of Hispanic heritage initially began as a week-long observance in 1968, under the presidency of Lyndon B Johnson. It was then turned into a month-long celebration in 1988 by Ronald Reagan. In 1988, it was also enacted into a law that made sure that the United States would pay tribute to Hispanic Americans. Now Hispanic Heritage month is celebrated September 15th to October 15th, with many countries celebrating the anniversary of their independence within this month.

Let’s come together to celebrate and learn about Hispanic traditions and customs. Begin by supporting our Hispanic owned businesses, and shopping and enjoying their foods. Incorporate books written by Hispanic authors, enjoy watching movies with Hispanic directors or actors, or dance to a playlist of your favorite Hispanic artists. Let’s unite and celebrate together to enrich ourselves in the Hispanic culture.

Go Beyond Grades

Go Beyond Grades returns for back-to-school, with new resources and tips to help families team up with their child’s teacher and start the school year strong:

  1. Help the teacher get to know your child using the Dear Teacher Letter.
  2. Find out what your child is expected to learn this year and have them take the Readiness Check to see how they are doing with grade-level math and reading skills. Get Questions to Ask Your Child’s Teacher About Reading and how to help at home.
  3. Make a game plan and stay connected with the Parent-Teacher Planning Tool.

There’s also a Teacher Page to support educators in partnering with families right from the start.

We invite you to share this toolkit on social media, and in your email communications with the families you work with.

Watch this short video of one family's story of getting their child the support they need in school.
