Nautical terms and origins

Athwartships - Across a vessel or boat. This word comes from an old Icelandic one, pwert, of this same meaning.

Cranse-Iron - The fitting on a sailing vessel's bowsprit for the jibboom; also later one type of hinge-fitting for a yard on its mast. This term appears to come from the Dutch word krans, meaning garland.

Man - As a verb, to put the necessary number of men to a function, such as the capstain, boat falls, etc.; also to furnish a ship with a crew. The word in this sense comes from old English, same word and meaning.

Sloop - (1) Now a one-masted fore-and-aft rigged sailboat. (2) Earlier and variety of small sailing vessels of different rigs; for example a sloop of war was usually ship-rigged. The derivation is not clear; it could be from the Dutch sloep, a vessel that sails well.

Model of the month -

From Robert L of MT

"I thought you might be interested in seeing my finished lobster boat from BlueJacket. I think I went a little overboard but I really like it - the detail is amazing - and everyone who sees it is amazed.  Now I am building 2 more just like this one - one for each of my sons.

I would be interested to hear a comment from Nic. In any case, here are a couple pictures".

Real Boat Names
Let's see YOUR workbench

From Ian H of the UK

Hi Trisha

We called in at the end of September on our way from Boston to Bar Harbour.

I attach a photo of a corner of my workshop.

You will see a Laughing Whale catboat and that I have a weakness for the designs of Ted Stinson.

I am currently building his Nellie G from plans although I do have the kit.

If you would like more pictures please let me know.

I believe that the business has been sold but will carry on with advice from Nic (and you?)and wish it all the best for the future.

Regards

Ian

What's on the workbench?

Nic's bench - I'm back to working on the Harriet Lane for a customer. At a scale of 1:144 these deadeyes are tiny!

Al's bench - Al has built several half-whales to sell in our gallery. They are really cute!

AND TOO GOOD TO WAIT FOR NEXT MONTH

Tip of the Month- Sanding mesh

This is from USS Constitution Model Shipwright Guild newsletter

"Bob has given up using sand paper and recommends instead, sanding mesh. This is an open grit shaping, sanding and polishing material that, because it is an open grit, is much less prone to clogging, and purported to last three times longer than sandpaper. This product is not to be confused with scouring pads. Bob uses a brand called Marika which he purchases on Amazon. Marika is just one of many brands you will find when you google: "Sanding mesh".   Jich’s Note: I found it in sheets, rolls and discs and available in grits from #80 (for floors) to number 20,000

(for ?).  Take a Peek"
