October 2021 in Review

Principal's Message...

The first grading period has wrapped up and our students have been very busy in their classrooms. As I walk through classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and playground areas, it is evident that the students are thriving in their environment. The staff and students have been busy reviewing procedures and expected behaviors. The children have been excited to create new friendships with other students in their class, as well as getting to know their teacher. As we strive to provide important communications to you, our goal is to share that information in a variety of ways. I encourage you to check the district and school websites, which can be accessed at www.kenstonlocal.org. Additionally, follow us on Twitter (@KenstonTES) for quick reminders and shout outs. The Twitter feed has been very active in providing parents glimpses of what our students experience daily at Timmons. Student Friday folders and e-blasts are two more ways for you to learn about various school events and other information. On behalf of the entire Timmons staff, we look forward sharing this exciting school year with your children and in partnership with you!

Inspiring Student Engagement...

Timmons teachers continue to make student engagement a priority. All students have been taught about being a Timmons HERO and why it is important to follow the Timmons HERO Rules: follow directions, speak kind words, keep body and objects to self, and respect property. They have practiced following these guidelines in their classrooms and across the building. While our Kindergarten students have focused on early literacy skills like identifying letters, first graders have been increasing reading stamina with a goal of 20 minutes of non-stop reading. With a little imagination...and some construction paper- first grade students have also created...Noun Town!

Meanwhile, second grade students are building relationships with peers as they engage in authentic data collection about each other and share moments through personal narrative writing. Third graders enjoyed learning about insect life cycles by fine-tuning their observation skills and reading and retelling folktales through the use of story maps.

Celebrating Student Leaders...

Student Council members were recently selected by third grade peers to represent them in making decisions that are environmentally conscious. This includes examining recycling efforts in the building, researching ways to improve, and developing awareness among students. Congratulations to the following students - we look forward to your leadership this school year: Isabelle Brace, Brooks Carroll, Ember Clemens, Brady Garber, Veya Gibson, Ava Kovalski, Kyla Kucharson, Joey Manning, Maisie McCabe, Ryan Mills, Aiden Pishko, Bea Seidenwand, Callie Tatman, and Nolan Vura.

We are excited to announce the 2021-22 3rd Grade PEAK Ambassadors at Timmons: Anna Gettig, Chase Craig, Grace Bull, Keller Case, (Front Row) Evelyn Yates, Erin Zydyk and Braylon Hairston. Students were nominated for this leadership role by their classroom teacher and/or classmates. They then completed an application outlining why they would like to accept the nomination. With their application, students committed to the duties of the role including participating in PEAK Ambassador building meetings, doing morning announcements, serving as service learning project coordinators, serving as the TES Welcome Team for special events (if needed) and being a good friend to all who need one!

Promoting Wellness...

During physical education classes students enjoyed the benefits of hiking in nature while accessing the Kenston Trails. Students participated in a backpacking simulation and prepared for a culminating event - a family day at the park featuring hiking, playing, observing nature, and simply enjoying beautiful fall day. Many thanks to the volunteers and families who joined us. We look forward to continuing this event in years to come!

Establishing a Peaceful Environment at Kenston (PEAK)...

Being a HERO in the Timmons Cafe...

Each day hundreds of students enjoy a lunch in the cafeteria. Lunch is a time of great socialization as students are encouraged to converse and enjoy less structured time with peers. In the Timmons Cafeteria, students are expected to follow guidelines: Have a quiet voice, Everyone cleans up their area, Respect the personal space of others, Only use positive words and actions. An informative video created by PEAK Ambassadors can be found here. Be a cafeteria HERO

As our young students are learning to follow these expectations, you can help. Take time to review them, allow for your child to take responsibility for cleaning up their eating space. Reinforce sitting at a table to eat while using a conversational voice. Helping children to be independent in opening packages is also a plus! Your support is appreciated - wishing you happy mealtimes!

Each month students receive direct instruction in skills that support them in working with peers, solving problem, staying focused, and demonstrating empathy. This month, students learned about iMessages and conflict resolution. iMessages teach that when someone says or does something that hurts our feelings, it is our responsibility to tell them.  A helpful way to let them know our feelings is to use iMessages. We say what we feel, what prompted the feeling and why.  This approach keeps the focus on yourself and gives the person a chance to explain, apologize or correct the action. iMessages are a research-based strategy that encourage open, healthy communication and empower students to work together to resolve their problems. The structure of the iMessage is:

"I feel _____ (feeling word)

"when" _____ (what happened)

"because" ____ (what it means to me)

Students participated in giving examples of their own iMessages during the lesson and are encouraged to use the strategy across school settings. This is a powerful strategy that can be reinforced at home.

Connecting with others through service learning...

On October 28th, students participated in the annual Read for the Record event, a service learning project promoted through the Jumpstart organization. This campaign engages over 2 million participants in achieving the following objectives:

  • Increase awareness about the critical importance of impact on early literacy
  • Make high quality children's books accessible for all children
  • Provide support for Jumpstart for Young Children's work with early learners and underserved communities across the country

The selected title, Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon,is a celebration of cultural symbols, family, and self-affirmation. All classrooms participated in a teacher guided lesson and read aloud of the story.
