July 2024 Director's Corner

July is National Park & Recreation month, and this year’s theme is “Where You Belong”; we couldn’t agree more! Living close to parks and other recreation facilities is consistently related to higher physical activity levels for both adults and youth. Moreover, studies show parks provide a connection to nature, relieve stress, improve mental health, and strengthen interpersonal relationships.

According to a national report, 84% of U.S. adults seek high-quality parks and recreation when choosing a place to live, and 88% agree it is vital for local park and recreation agencies to engage with every member of their community to ensure offerings meet their needs. The Town’s 2012 Master Plan, Navigate Cornelius, established a vision of “promoting the highest quality of life for all residents”. When we gathered input for our 2024-2034 Parks & Greenways Master Plan, residents affirmed their desire for a high-quality park system to meet their need for the highest quality of life. Our plan was a result of intense and frequent public engagement, including months of public workshops, interviews, and surveys, with participation from nearly 500 citizens.

This fall, Cornelius residents may have the opportunity to vote on a $20 million park bonds referendum. The new master plan guided the Parks and Recreation Commission and Town Board in recommending potential park bond projects, which address expressed needs for land acquisition; open space preservation; park improvements; and greenway, recreation center, and park development. The Town Board will decide whether to hold a bond referendum when they meet Monday, July 15, 6pm at Town Hall, and the public is invited to attend.
