Recap: June Quarterly Partner Meeting

Thank you to all who attended Framing Foundations: Maricopa County Community Health Improvement Plan!

We had a great turnout of attendees from across the valley. Thank you to all who provided valuable insights and feedback, helping us prioritize emerging health needs from the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) data to start the 2024-2026 Maricopa County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP).

In case you missed it, here is a brief recap of events:

  • CHNA collection methods and preview of results
  • Maricopa County Department of Public Health provided a preview of 2023 CHNA survey data and an overview of common themes from CHNA focus groups and key informant interviews. They also covered the methodology used for prioritizing data.
  • Improving Public Health through Civic Engagement
  • Vot-ER is a non-partisan group that provides tools and resources to help people vote. Sandra Gutierrez with Vot-ER presented research that shows a link between voter participation and health outcomes, and the support Vot-ER provides to encourage civic engagement in clinical spaces. Click to learn more about their work.
  • Voting to prioritize CHNA data and review of voting results
  • Meeting attendees were presented with data indicators and asked to rate each based on set criteria. Results from voting were shared afterwards and attendees reviewed how each indicator ranked. Lastly, attendees were asked to provide feedback on the results and share what they thought was missing.

Please note: The presentation slides and meeting minutes attached below do not include all slides and notes presented during the meeting as they included preliminary CHNA data that has not yet been published. The data was shown to meeting attendees to provide context to assist with the voting activity. We expect this data to be published and shared in the coming weeks. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

New Heat Data Dashboard and Toolkit

Maricopa County Department of Public Health recently launched an interactive dashboard that tracks heat-related illnesses and deaths in the county. The dashboard seeks to provide more accessible and timely data on countywide heat-related hospital visits and deaths.

They have also created a toolkit to help spread the word about free heat relief services and sites in Maricopa County. Click to view the toolkit. County residents can call 2-1-1 for information on heat relief sites, including libraries and community centers, that provide a free and safe place to cool off into the evening hours. 2-1-1 can also provide information on A/C repair, water, and more.

News from the Arizona Health Improvement Plan (AZHIP) Data Advisory Committee:

As you may recall seeing in the March HIPMC newsletter, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) published the Arizona Social Vulnerability Index (AZSVI). There are many ways that this data can be used to support community health interventions. Here are a few ideas of objectives that you could use for your next project!

  • “We boosted resources for the clinics located in places with the highest AZSVI scores”
  • "XX% of funding went to organizations which reach communities that have an AZSVI score over 0.75"
  • "XX% of census tracts with an AZSVI score over 0.75 were reached in our __ health initiative"

In addition, we recognize that community engagement is important in all phases of data. Through the AZHIP and partnership with Arizona State University Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center, ADHS is making accessible a list of resources related to Community Based Participatory Research, a training video with handouts, and a recorded webinar that highlights the work of these five Arizona organizations:

  • Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC)
  • House of Miracles Inc (HOMI)
  • Navajo County Public Health Department
  • Phoenix Birth Foundation
  • Weaver Mountains Health Initiative

Please reach out to healthequity@azdhs.gov to request the webinar and resources.
