YOU are changing lives in Kitsap.

Welcome to the Quarterly Newsletter of Kitsap Rescue Mission!

Hello Friends of the Kitsap Rescue Mission,

Welcome to the first KRM Quarterly Newsletter of 2024! We’ve started this newsletter because many of you have requested ongoing communication from the Mission to better inform you of upcoming events and the current happenings in our Ministry.

Our guests here in the emergency shelter have had so much success and we want to share with you that 23 individuals and families have been transitioned to permanent housing already in 2024!

The majority of our guests were unhoused in Kitsap County, and we have varying age groups in shelter. Since the end of the COVID lockdown, we have begun to see more and more families with small children coming into shelter. As always, our goal is to provide love, dignity, and compassionate support to build a community that cares for those experiencing homelessness.

We do this by ensuring each guest is welcomed and triaged during the intake process. A housing stability plan is developed and is uniquely tailored to address the goals and needs of each guest. Using a holistic restorative approach (body, mind, spirit), we provide onsite Case Management, Housing Navigation, and Behavioral Health intervention and treatment (mental health and substance abuse treatment), and medical and dental care through our strong community partnerships. By providing these services onsite and in real-time we are able to help our guests when they actually need it.

This November, we will be moving our entire shelter ministry to the Pacific Building in Port Orchard (see link below to learn more about the Pacific Building), and we will no longer be located at our temporary location at the Quality Inn. This is an exciting transition for both our guests and staff as we continue growing our ministry to provide comprehensive emergency shelter to our most vulnerable community members. Pacific Building

In addition, in late summer this year, our Women’s Ministry will open “Abby’s House”, a permanent supportive housing program for 10-12 women in a building in Port Orchard that the Mission purchased in 2023. The house was named after Abigail (1 Samuel 25:2-42) whose courage, discernment and humility are an example of wisdom and compassion for all women seeking Christ. The home is on a bus line, has ample parking, and will be ADA accessible. (See the image below of this beautiful home). We will continue to keep you in the loop and will open the home to our donors and the community for tours once renovations are complete.

As always, we are deeply grateful for your prayers and the sharing of your resources with the Mission. We truly could not do our critical work without your help and support.

In Christ,

Robin Lund

Future Women's Forever Home - Abby's House

Construction on the new shelter in Port Orchard has begun!

It's been a long planning period, and now it is actually happening. Construction began in February of this year at the new location in Port Orchard. The partnership between Kitsap Rescue Mission and Kitsap County will provide continuous stay shelter and support hopefully early this winter!

Guest Success!

Ron had extensive barriers to attain permanent housing. Doesn't he radiate pure joy receiving keys to his new home?!? He worked hard at achieving his ultimate goal, to move into his very own home! If former guests choose to, they can continue to have support for 45 days after transitioning to their new place. Please join us in congratulating him!

KRM Donor's Corner

KRM Board Member tells why he shares his QCD from his IRA with the organization.

There are many ways to support a charitable organization such as Kitsap Rescue Mission. I chose to give through Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) from my Individual Retirement Account (IRA) after I turned 70½.

When I turned 70½ I realized I was going to have start taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) from my IRA in a few years. I wanted to minimize the future RMDs, and part of my plan was to shift my regular charitable contributions to QCDs from my IRA. This allowed me to reduce my IRA balance without having additional taxable income. This worked particularly well for me because I was unable to itemize deductions making the charitable deduction unavailable to me.

After I started taking RMDs from my IRA, the QCDs (if timed correctly) counted against the amount of the RMD I needed to include in my income. This reduced my taxable income and reduced the income that could trigger the Income-related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) surcharge for my Medicare and Part D insurance premiums. The QCD is a powerful tool for reducing your taxes while you continue your planned charitable contributions.

According to the IRS, "Normally, distributions from a traditional IRA are taxable when received. With a QCD, however, these distributions become tax-free as long as they are paid directly from the IRA to an eligible charitable organization. QCD's must be made directly to the trustee of the IRA to the charity." To learn more, you can read IRA document IR-2023-215, November 16, 2023.

As always, check with your estate planning attorney, tax advisor and financial planner to see if this may work for you.
