You may have noticed recent tree clearing and other signs of pending construction at this park, including the temporary closure of its popular disc golf course. Meanwhile, we have seen several threads on social media expressing thoughts and questions regarding the project now underway: Northcross Drive Extension (NDE). We want to take this opportunity to relay the history of NDE and Robbins Park, as well as the future for both. This road, envisioned by the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) since 2004, will connect the existing Northcross Drive north from its current terminus off NC 73 (near the Huntersville CATS Park and Ride), through currently vacant land, and will join with the existing Eagle Ridge Way. The extension will end in a newly constructed roundabout on Westmoreland Road. Once the road is completed, the Town of Cornelius has plans to expand both the passive and active recreational amenities of Robbins Park, establishing a park entrance off the new road. Proposed new amenities include wildlife viewing areas, 5K cross country trail, open play areas, athletic fields and courts, and a redesigned disc golf course.
Here is the timeline of events:
NCDOT added NDE as part of its MUMPO Thoroughfare Plan.
The Town of Cornelius developed the initial Robbins Park Master Plan with NDE envisioned as the main entrance to the park.
Phase I of Robbins Park was constructed, including the “crescent”.
Charlotte Disc Golf Club planned and built the disc golf course, with the understanding that it would need to be reconfigured once NDE was constructed.
Phase II of Robbins Park was completed, including a network of paved and natural-surface trails, reconstruction of two ponds, and fishing piers.
NCDOT held a public meeting to share updated plans for NDE.
Cornelius Parks & Recreation held two public surveys and three public workshops to discuss plans for an updated Robbins Park Master Plan, incorporating NDE as the main entrance and a vision for a blend of active and passive recreation space including a reconfigured disc golf course.
NCDOT received funding to build NDE. Without notice to the Town of Cornelius, their contractor began clearing and grading, which effectively closed the disc golf course. Recently, Energy United has mobilized to relocate utilities for road construction, which NCDOT intends to start later this year. During utility relocation and road construction, McDowell Creek Greenway will be temporarily closed, and NCDOT will post a detour route through Robbins Park and Westmoreland Athletic Complex for the safety of trail users and to maintain connectivity along the greenway.
