Lets focus on your Gifted child
Supporting a gifted child involves a holistic approach that addresses their educational, social, and emotional development. Here are some ways you can support your gifted child:
-
Educational Development: Confirm your child’s giftedness through achievement tests or abilities tests. These tests can help your child gain entry into gifted programs (such as Choice School)
-
Academic Environment: Ensure your child is in the right academic environment. Traditional school settings do not provide the personalized curriculum needed.
-
Extracurricular Activities: During school breaks, consider programs specifically designed for gifted students. Look for summer camps that stimulate their education and allow them to connect.
-
Social Development: Be open-minded about your child’s choice of friends. Gifted children may have unique interests and benefit from connecting with peers who share their passions.
-
Intellectual Challenges: Provide opportunities for intellectual challenges. Engage your child in activities that stimulate their curiosity and critical thinking skills.
-
Emotional Support: Gifted children may experience heightened emotions. Be there to listen and validate their feelings.

Ms. Sueyoshi
Ms. Sueyoshi always knew she wanted to be a teacher. When she was young, she would line up her stuffies in rows and read them books, making sure each one could see the pictures. She further strengthened her resolve when she did a teaching exchange in Japan where she taught English to Japanese students in the classroom. She received her Bachelor of Education after returning to Vancouver and from there worked in classrooms around the world.
As an educator, Ms. Sueyoshi works to foster a safe and supportive learning environment. She believes that every child is capable of success. With the right tools and strategies, children can take ownership over their own development and be an active participant in their learning. She also understands the importance of nurturing each child's social emotional growth in the classroom.
Ms. Sueyoshi is a mother to three young children. She forgets what free time looks like, but when she gets the opportunity again one day, she would love to go on quiet walks and eat peacefully in a restaurant.

The Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair
This event wrapped up its three-day event at the University of British Columbia from April 4th to 6th, 2024, highlighting the exceptional talent and creativity of young scholars from the region. Participants included Miguel, Kaleb, and Hanson from Choice School, who enthralled both audiences and judges with their innovative projects.
Kaleb from Choice School earned an Honorable Mention in the Junior category for his exceptional project, impressing the judges with his commitment and creativity, and garnering praise from fellow participants.
Hanson, another talented student from Choice School, won the Bronze medal in the Junior category for his outstanding project. His innovative methodology and thorough research distinguished him in a competitive field, highlighting his dedication to scientific exploration.

Grandparents Tea
Our second Grandparents Tea was an amazing function. As the grandparents arrived, they received a warm welcome from Mr. Bolina and their grandchildren at the gate. Subsequently, they were guided to the gymnasium, where Ms. Jameela had arranged assigned seating for everyone.
A delightful selection of pastries along with an assortment of teas and coffee was served to all. The scrumptious pastries were thoroughly relished by everyone.
| |
The grandparents enjoyed various musical renditions by our students, along with a special performance by Majid. The afternoon was a heartfelt celebration, honoring the grandparents for their contributions to our community. Witnessing the joy of our grandparents at Choice School was truly heartwarming.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the families and in particular the grandparents that attended the event - you are an essential part of our community.

Mathematica Centrum math contest
As we have an enriched math program, this has allowed many of our students to extend their knowledge and application of mathematics.
We offer many math contests for our students, including mathematica centrum. These contests start at grade 3 and so allow our younger mathematicians to showcase their problem solving skills.
Over 20 students participated in these contests during April - the results will be available by mid-June.

Choice School attends Alberta Provincials
SchoolReach's Reach for the Top is a captivating academic quiz competition tailored for high school students. Nonetheless, our exceptional students from grade 5 onwards join Mr. Bolina every Tuesday to participate, and their brilliance shines through.
| |
On April 13, 2024, Choice School was invited to participate in the Alberta SchoolReach Provincials. So, a team of five players handpicked by Mr. Bolina from Choice School flew to Calgary hoping to participate, have fun and learn lots of new information.
|
However, our players proved to be worthy winners as they won their first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth games. Some of the games that our team won were against some of the best teams in Alberta. It was only in the seventh game that we faced our first defeat, and even that could have gone either way! In the end, Choice School won third place in the Alberta Provincials. That's not bad at all, considering that this is our first year at this tournament. We are so proud of our Choice School School Reach Team!
A special thanks to the parents that accompanied Mr. Bolina in Calgary - your support is very much appreciated!
School Reach has become so popular in school - we play twice a week. In addition to a students game every Tuesday, we have a students v teachers game every Wednesday!
We are now looking forward to the Nationals which will be played online at the end of May!

Spelling Bee
At the end of Spring Break, some Choice School students participated in the BC Chapter of the Canadian Spelling Bee!
Each of the students did an amazing job practicing and participating over the previous two months. While many students performed well, one of our students achieved third place in the contest. Please congratulate Logan from Birch class for this awesome performance. We will continue Spelling Bee club next year as this is something that our students enjoy and learn a great deal from.

BC Chess Challenge
During the past few months, our chess players have been practicing their chess moves in the weekly chess club. This leads to Provincial qualifiers and then the BC Team championships and BC Provincials.
We are delighted to report that Choice School has earned third place in BC (that's means the third best chess school in BC).
In addition, Oliver (Pine class) won third in the BC Chess Challenge.
We are delighted with these results and congratulate all our chess players for their efforts.

Flyover
Hemlock and Cedar classes had a great time when they visited Flyover Canada at Canada Place. Flyover offers an exhilarating experience that takes you on virtual flying journeys to some of the most breathtaking places on Earth. There were a number of shows on offer but we watched "Windborne: Call of the Rockies".
From the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies, and beyond the alpine beauty, we discovered the true spirit of the Rocky mountains. This was definitely an experience that we would want again!
|
Choice School Gardens
Our students have been very busy with the Choice School gardens. It all started just before spring break when Oak, Cedar and Hemlock classes planted marigold seeds in small pots. These seeds have now sprouted and are flowering. Students were lucky to witness the growth each day and took responsibility watering the seedlings.
During the month of April, the greenhouse was renovated with brad new vegetable boxes. Students from Birch class planted a bunch of radishes and potatoes. We have already harvested our very own radishes already! Since then, classes have planted spring onions, peas, tomatoes, eggplants, corn, basil, cilantro, sage, beetroot and carrots!
| |
You may also have noticed the beautiful marigolds that welcome you in the parking lot when you drop the children to the school.
These were planted by Hemlock class students a few weeks ago and are now blooming in full colour. These marigolds will bloom all summer long and well into the fall.
We ask all parents and students to ensure that these are not knocked over as you walk on the sidewalk to the front gate. Parents are also requested to take care when backing onto the sidewalk when parking. Please do not back up too much hat it covers the sidewalk.
