The Networks Northwest Board has hired Janie McNabb as the new Chief Executive Officer at Networks Northwest. She is hired for the leadership position at the organization which provides workforce, business, and community development services in the 10 counties of northwest Lower Michigan. McNabb comes to Networks Northwest from serving as a workforce and strategy consultant around the state, primarily in affiliation with Strategic Policy Consultants. Prior to that, she spent 18 years in various roles at Networks Northwest, including Northwest Michigan Works! chief operating officer. McNabb’s diverse experience includes workforce programs and policy, organizational culture, communications, and public relations. She holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Development and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature. 


Gift of Life Michigan has announced that in April it will honor Munson Medical Center (MMC) as hospital of the year along with ICU nurse manager, Eric Jean as donation liaison champion and John Stanifer, MD, and his wife Molly as community partner champion. Over the last year, Munson Medical Center helped to honor the last wishes of 22 organ donors and 56 tissue donors (fourth highest in the state). Each organ donor can save up to eight lives while each tissue donor can help up to 75 patients heal. This amounts to hundreds of lives that have been transformed by the generosity of organ and tissue donors from MMC. Click here to read the full press release.

Ribbon Cutting

The Petoskey and Harbor Springs Chambers held a ribbon cutting on March 7 to help Dodson Payment Solutions celebrate their new office at 7340 M-68 Highway in Alanson, where businesspeople can stop in and see demos of their point-of-sale systems. The new office is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Office demos allow businesspeople to get a hands-on tryout before buying from a local business. Dodson Payment Solutions has a history of more than 25 years of helping businesses in northern Michigan. Join the Little Traverse Conservancy for a workshop focusing on the pruning and care of apple trees. Led by Nate Dionne, LTC’s recreation field supervisor, whose family has run an apple orchard business for many years, this workshop will feature demonstrations of pruning old and abandoned apple trees to increase their vigor, productivity, and appearance. Participants will then have the chance to put these principles and objectives to use on the trees found at the Offield Working Forest Reserve outside of Harbor Springs. Participants are invited to bring their own loppers/pole saws. Limited quantities of tools including pruners and pole saws will be available for use during the hands-on portion of the workshop. Brother Dan’s Food Pantry and Outreach invites the community to their annual Lenten fish dinner that takes place every Friday from February 16 through March 22 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall in Petoskey. This will be dine in or take out. The cost for 6 and under is free. The cost for 7 through 12-year-olds is $7.00 and for adults is $15.00. Come and enjoy a delicious homemade dinner. ALL proceeds will go towards the purchase of food for the pantry. March is national reading month, and Emmet County Parks & Recreation is hosting a Freecycle book drive. Drop gently used children’s books at the Emmet County Community Building located at the fairgrounds during the month of March, and the books will be redistributed for others to enjoy. Odawa Casino in Petoskey is hosting pool tournaments in their new restaurant, Room 94 Taps & Bourbon. These tournaments are Wednesday nights starting February 21 at 7:00 p.m. They will be $20.00 which includes a $5.00 greens fee, and they will be 3 and out format, so you are guaranteed at least 3 games. Note- there is no pool tournament on March 13.

Petoskey Rotary Club Charities Inc. (PRCCI) is now accepting grant applications for its 2024 grant cycle. Nonprofit organizations, education institutions and municipalities that benefit the greater Petoskey and Emmet County area are invited to submit applications. Organizations in fields such as youth, arts and culture, education, community development, recreation, and health and human services are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to projects that align with the Petoskey Rotary Noon Club current initiatives of workforce development, affordable housing, childcare, and mental health wellness. The Petoskey Downtown Management Board is seeking a title sponsor for the Downtown Petoskey Holiday Parade. This 25-year-old event is being moved from its traditional Saturday evening after Thanksgiving date to the morning of the second Saturday in December beginning in 2024. It is also being given a new focus on community through its management by the Sunrise Rotary group. The goal is for the event to grow and attract more and more visitors in the coming years. Great Lakes Youth Choirs of Voices Without Borders is happy to announce their new board president, Missy Leverett. Former president Brenda Bell handed the reigns over to Missy this month. Missy relocated to Petoskey in 2020 after retiring from a 25-year marketing career based in Grand Rapids & recently opened Malted Vinyl in downtown Petoskey. Missy and her husband have 3 adult sons and a daughter in middle school. Missy has been a vital asset on the GLYC of VWB board for several years and they are excited to welcome her into her new role as president.
