Gratitude. One word that means so much, particularly at this time of year.
We are pretty sure they knew what they were getting our family into when Wally and Ruthann “dropped anchor” sixty-six years ago and purchased the Hathaway Boatyard, a piece of time-worn history formerly known as the Currier-Townsend Shipyard. The Shipyard was known for, among other things, building the clipper ship “Dreadnaught”, famous for holding the transatlantic speed record for sailing ships back in her time.
Tasked with preserving the maritime traditions of the past while building their dreams of the future, these young legacy makers rolled up their sleeves and set out to build Merri-Mar Yacht Basin from scratch, grow their family, and become an integral resource for those who have a love of life on the water. Six plus decades, three generations, and an abundant amount of boat enthusiasts later, MMYB has evolved into a full-service marina with seasonal & transient moorings & dockage, with a year-round Repairs & Service Department, Parts Department, Ship’s Store, and a Boat Brokerage for both power & sail.
Although so much has changed so many things have stayed the same. The MMYB extended family continues to grow…some old salts and their generations of families have been with us since our beginnings. Then of course there are the cycles of the seasons. As Wally used to say, “Time and tide waits for no man”. So here we are. Another end-of-season hustle, pushing through the swings of New England temps changing daily from 70+ degrees to near-freezing with sideways snow & rain - hauling, winterizing, shrink wrapping, and buttoning up the waterfront for the winter. The work doesn’t end there, we just move inside to start on the nitty gritty projects that will get the MMYB extended family safely back in the water in the Spring. And then we begin again.
We are so grateful for Wally & Ruthann’s hard work and forethought to name the marina the Merri-Mar Yacht Basin. Merri-Mar is Latin for Joyful Sea. Their legacy has brought joy and will continue to bring joy to the lives of so many people well into the future. We are grateful for our hard-working crew who keep marina operations humming year-round. And, we are grateful for you, members of our extended family, for your continued support, business and friendship.
From our family to yours wishing you much joy, good health, and Fair Winds & a Following Sea this holiday season.
With gratitude,

"The Hauler"
Wally was a man of many talents. He was a creative and innovative problem-solver whose “can do” attitude was rooted in his service in the US Navy as a Seabee during WWII. Their battalion was charged with building landing strips, hospital stations, and bridges needed by the Navy and Marines in Hawaii and the Philippines. Wally was always looking for ways to improve yard logistics and maximize the space. Boat storage in the small yard was/is a challenge so Wally started thinking about what it would take to move boats around easier and maximize the space. Wally’s solution: The MARINE MASTER HAUL, was designed, fabricated, and completed in 1986. “The Hauler”, is a 30 ft long, self-propelled machine with individual arms maneuvered by using electric hydraulic controls, a joystick & push button pad. The operator can move “the Hauler” back & forth, turn it on a very tight radius, position it under the boat and then “lift itself” so the padded arms can position it precisely. “The Hauler”, and Wally’s ingenuity, are still in use on a daily basis. It is one of the most used pieces of equipment in the yard during launching & hauling seasons.

'Tis the Season: Gift Giver Early Times
Keeping the tradition of commercial fishing alive is not easy. It is no secret that the combination of regulatory and financial constraints has presented continuously increasing challenges for smaller commercial fishermen to stay afloat.
Introducing Danny Connors III. This locally beloved and colorful fixture on the Newburyport waterfront has been fishing the waters from the Canadian border to New Bedford for more than 40 years. In the 80’s, Danny was just out of high school when his career was christened with an adventurous delivery of a stripped-down bare hull from Nova Scotia to Newburyport, with his father Dan “Buzza” Connors II, and his brother-in-law. From there they spent the next two years building Early Times, a 44’ wooden trawler that would launch this family’s legacy for two generations.
As you might imagine, the upkeep and maintenance of Early Times has been as challenging as surviving within the confines of state and federal fishing regulations. Over the decades, she has been glassed over, and over…and over. In 2018, she was repowered with a Cummins QSM11, ensuring that she is Tier III Emission and Fuel Standards-compliant (EPA), reducing her carbon footprint and doing her part to be environmentally responsible.
About 15 years ago, Danny made the difficult decision to shift from ground fishing (cod, haddock, flounder, etc.) to scalloping. The IFQ’s (Individual Fishing Quotas) were just too low to justify labor & fuel, dramatically impacting the ROI. Early Times just couldn’t compete with the 100’+ foot commercial fishing trawlers. Just a note: Did you know that each scallop in the 200lb daily catch is shucked, one at a time, by Danny & his crew before delivering to David’s Fish Market in Salisbury, MA? Partnering through these shifts in business, navigating fishing regs, and maintaining a safe and compliant vessel has truly been a joint venture between Merri-Mar Yacht Basin & Early Times (among others). The mutual investments made over the years exemplify the shared commitment to sustaining commercial fishing locally, feeding locally, and engaging the community in keeping our water-based traditions alive for generations to come.
After an extensive refit over the past 4 months, (August – December 2022), Early Times will head out of the mouth of the Merrimac River, carrying with her the legacy of generations of fishing out of Newburyport, for yet another season. So the next time you wrap that scallop in bacon or turn on that burner for a good pan sear, think about the hard work and many hands involved in getting those tasty gifts to you.

MMYB Custom Spares Kits
More often than not, OEM (original equipment manufacturer) spare parts kits don’t do the trick. At MMYB we specialize in building kits specific to the captain’s needs. Whether you are a day trip operator or leaving to circumnavigate the globe, we can customize a Spares Kit to meet your actual needs. “I often tell people that OEM kits are like a first aid kit. Once you use up the band aides, gauze pads, and alcohol wipes you are left with a bunch of goop no one ever uses anyway. Let us build you a Spares Kits tailored to your needs and not waste the valuable space onboard with useless goop”, says MMYB’s Parts Manager Billy Keefe.
