Monthly News & Updates

March 2022 | Issue 8

From the Co-Presidents

Opening Luncheon Flourish Logo.JPG

Yay! It’s March! It’s my favorite month of the year! Spring is here (or around the corner depending on the day), there is such promise and everyone just seems happier! It’s also the month of my birthday and my daughter’s birthday and I feel like we celebrate all month!

Well, I think there is ALOT to celebrate coming up with CPWC. We have so much to look forward to! Unfortunately, there is no First Friday this month, but please join us next month. This has become one of my favorite CPWC events because we see such a variety of fun people that we don’t normally see in our usual friend group. I’ll confess, I didn’t even attend these events until this year, and boy, was I missing out! (Thank you to Karyn Porter for organizing these events). We do, however, have the Annual Wine Tasting hosted by the fabulous Daytime Programs Committee on March 18. This is also a great event because who doesn’t love wine, cheese, and friends? If you have never attended, join us and bring a prospective new member!

The big focus for us as Presidents right now is the Masquerade Ball on April 30, chaired by a brave relative newcomer, Sterling Lanken. Our charity this year is Great Prospects which is an organization that provides post-secondary and summer programs for adolescents and young adults with developmental disabilities. This is a wonderful organization and all the proceeds from the ball will go to support them. There are so many of us who have children with learning or developmental disabilities, making this program is so relatable. Please consider buying a ticket for the ball because not only will it be a great time with great people (there will be an auction AND whiskey tasting) but it will support families who really don’t have many care options once the young adult ages out of the school system. Go to Great Prospects for more information.

Here’s to a great month of great weather, great health, and, of course, great friendships!

Gardening Interest Group

Upcoming Events

March 9 McFarlane Nature Park 10 a.m.

Members of the garden interest group asked if we could tour McFarlane and find out what all those garden signs are about. We will hope for great weather (with a rain date of Thursday 3-10) and walk the display gardens at the Park.  What is Ernest's Fern Swale? Who was Ernest? These and other questions will be answered as we talk about the history of the Park and the significance of different garden areas on display. We may visit the nascent meadow, the long leaf pine grove, and rest on the CPWC Anniversary bench. Sturdy, close-toed shoes are recommended. Bring a bag lunch if you want to stay and eat at the Park.

Our members have committed to over 100 Butterfly Weed plants (asclepias tuberosa) which will allow us to extend a welcome to Monarch butterflies throughout the neighborhood.  The landscape-sized plugs (5" x 2") are being grown for us by the Chattahoochee Nature Center and are expected to be ready by mid-May. This is in keeping with the normally late emergence of the plants in spring.  Because of this tardy habit, it will be important to mark the location of the perennial plants so that they are not dug up in subsequent planting seasons. A handy way to do that is to cut the bottoms out of cat food or tuna cans and sink the resulting rim in the soil around the new plants.

April 13, 2022   10 a.m. A visit to the Goizueta Gardens of the Atlanta History Center. Group tickets will be arranged for a group of 10 paid visitors, with applicable rates for 65+ and adults - of course, History Center members are free. All the gardens and buildings are included in the self-guided visit.

Please contact Karin Guzy with questions or comments.
