Dear ones,
Today was one of the really beautiful miracle days. Oh it's not that every day doesn't offer up some miraculous beauty if I only pay attention. But today was one of those best days, one of the days I didn't need to work one speck to see the fullness of God's love. This afternoon, I had the honor of presiding at the marriage of two beautiful souls whose love is making the world a better place. Such tenderness, such beauty, such deep and rich commitment to each other and to a better world ... and I was invited right into the middle of it. Please join me in thanking our God for the love Gigi and Whit (son of Chris Davis) share, and the many ways their love is already changing the world. So happy!!
A reminder that Saturday (tomorrow) is Pride Day on Bainbridge Island. Please join in the festivities at Waterfront Park, and come hang out with your friends at the St B booth! It's so important for us to stand in solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ siblings and to let the wider community know that God loves each and every one of us without exception! Hope to see you at the festival!
Looking ahead, on Sunday we begin what might just seem like the never ending scripture saga of the "bread of life" in John's gospel. We begin with John's feeding of the multitudes, a story that (most unusually) appears in all four gospels. Etienna reminded me of Mary Oliver's poem that preaches this scripture far better than I ever will...
Why worry about the loaves and fishes?
If you say the right words, the wine expands.
If you say them with love
and the felt ferocity of that love
and the felt necessity of that love,
the fish explode into many.
Imagine him, speaking,
and don’t worry about what is reality,
or what is plain, or what is mysterious.
If you were there, it was all those things.
If you can imagine it, it is all those things.
Eat, drink, be happy.
Accept the miracle.
Accept, too, each spoken word
spoken with love.
--"Logos" by Mary Oliver, from Devotions
Don't worry...
More love, more love...
Can't wait to see you in church on Sunday! Faithfully, Karen†

Women’s Retreat Registration
I’m delighted to invite the women of St. Barnabas to a weekend of renewal… a Women’s Retreat at beautiful St. Andrew’s House on Hood Canal. We will gather late in the afternoon on Friday, September 27, and stay through Sunday morning Eucharist. The cost for the weekend is $285, which covers scrumptious meals, cozy accommodations, and a bit of lovely indulgence for us all. We’ll have precious time alone, will come to know ourselves and one another in ways we never imagined, and we will return to our homes, our families, and our parish more connected with God, with each other, and with ourselves.
St Andrew’s House has limited space, so if you’d like to join us, please make your reservation soon! A $50 non–refundable deposit is required with your
reservation, and payment in full is due by September 10. Registration forms can be downloaded here, or pick up a form at the Sunday Welcome Table or in the parlor. Drop off registration forms and checks in the drop box outside the parlor doors, at the office, or in the offering plate on Sunday mornings.
If you have questions, or would like to request a scholarship, kindly email Rev. Karen at revkaren@stbbi.org.

Join us for Church on the Beach on Sunday, August 11 at 10 a.m.! We’ll gather on the shores of Puget Sound at Fay Bainbridge Park for what has become a favorite event for our parish. We’ll celebrate Holy Eucharist together on the beach and then enjoy an afternoon of picnicking, playing, and spending time together in God’s beautiful, beloved creation.
Bring blankets for picnicking (there are picnic tables too), beach chairs for worshipping (or you can sit on a log!) and whatever you need for your picnic lunches (including food, plates, cups, cutlery, etc.). The church will provide ice water and lemonade. Look for the signs that say “St. Barnabas” to find your way to our service & picnic. Note that a burn ban means we can't grill, so bring food that is ready to eat. Can’t wait to see you there!
Please note that 8 a.m. service will take place at St. Barnabas as usual. There will be no Godly Play on August 11.

How Does Your Garden Grow?
“The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.” Song of Songs 2:12
If your garden is bountiful this summer, the Altar Guild would love for you to share your gifts with our church community. Bring you flower cuttings just outside of the sacristy, in the breezeway next to the parlor entrance, any Friday afternoon/evening or very early Saturday morning, and the Altar Guild will create beautiful arrangements to adorn the chancel on Sunday. Thank you for sharing your abundance with St. Barnabas!

I have good news and bad news.
The good news is that Episcopal principles, such as kindness, inclusion, acceptance, creation stewardship and tolerance, are now being taught again in the secular world. The bad news is that Christ is getting absolutely no credit for them and God is never mentioned.
Corporate America is now attending workshops full of Christian principles that have been cleansed of Christ but are still important for a harmonious and tolerant workplace. Experts with PhDs and Masters Degrees have rebranded Christianity and, through diversity, equity and inclusion training, are teaching respect for all people regardless of their race, creed, color, national origin or disability. They’re teaching the process of decolonization to unpack hundreds of years of privilege and hurt – something we all need to learn.
I don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand, in a world full of war, hate, violence, racism and intolerance, I am thrilled that those who, for whatever reason, have eschewed God and generally all Christian principles are now learning those principles rebranded into secular terms. The message is important and needs to be heard in whatever curriculum they will accept.
On the other hand, I’m sad that the people hearing the message aren’t getting the full message that they are children of God. They aren’t hearing the best part – the part about hope and redemption that Rev Karen preached so eloquently about on Easter Sunday morning.
I suppose I should just be happy that kindness, inclusion, acceptance, peace, love, compassion, tolerance and stewardship of creation are being “preached” to secular America in whatever form and under whatever auspices. Today our world certainly needs more of all of those things.

Praying For Each Other:
The St. Barnabas Prayer Chain
| |
Is there someone you would like us to pray for? Would you like to pray for others in our community? The St. Barnabas Prayer Chain consists of a group of volunteers who believe in the power of prayer and who willingly and regularly pray for others. Drucy Burnet Hodge (drucy15@msn.com or 206/780-2904) coordinates our chain, receiving requests for prayers, and sends those prayers out to the ones who pray. If you would like us to pray for you or someone you love, please contact Drucy. Prayer requests can be as simple as giving a first name and asking for prayers or more detailed, if you’d like. Parishioners remain on the prayer list for a month, non–parishioners for two weeks. The long-term prayer list is periodically reviewed and revised. If you would like to join us in praying for the people on our Prayer Chain, please email Drucy at drucy15@msn.com, and ask to be added to the list.

We look forward more beautiful conversations and creations with the youngest members of our congregation this Sunday!
