August 2-3 Coles County Speedway race, 5pm

  • Gates open at 5pm for event hosted by Noah Betts racing. The Coles County Speedway is located at 10743 E Co Rd 900 N, Mattoon.


August 3 Whiteside Garden guided tours, 10-11am

  • Join one of the volunteers (Master Gardeners & Master Naturalist) on a guided tour through the garden. Learn the history of the garden and it's founder, Dr. Wesley Whiteside. Plus, blooming flowers will highlighted as well as unique and interesting plants! No tickets are needed. Free, but donations are GREATLY appreciated.


August 3 Butterfly Festival, Lake Charleston, 11am

  • Celebrating our Natural Resources! Kids Activities, Expert Advice, Nature Walks, Kite-Flying Performances, Food, Kayak Demo, and more! Park at Linder Sports Complex, watch the kite performers and then catch the Panther Shuttle to Lake Charleston, all free! August 3 Stewardship Saturday, Warbler Ridge Conservation Area, 9-11am

  • All ages, abilities and experience levels of people are invited to join in on the first Saturday of each month at Warbler Ridge Conservation Area. Each Saturday is a new fun task and explores different areas of the 1,100-acre Preserve. Questions? Contact Sarah Zoppa; zoppa@grandprairiefriends.org. Bring appropriate clothing – long pants and shirt, work shoes and gloves; Water to drink. 


August 3 NFPB Bull Riding at the Coles County Fair, 7-9pm

  • National Federation of Professional Bull riders will be riding at the Coles County Fair. Entry is free and open to the public.


August 4 Mattoon YMCA Community Block Party, 12-4pm

  • Come out and join the YMCA to celebrate the opening of the new community YMCA Park located directly across the street from the Mattoon Area Family YMCA. Food trucks, music, games & family fun! Free to attend and open to the public. See you at the park.


August 4 Summer Sundays on the Farm, Lincoln Log Cabin, 1-4pm

  • Stop by and visit the Lincoln kitchen on Sundays this summer for demonstration 19th-century cooking and food preservation. We’ll run the gamut from plain to fancy fare though baking, boiling, frying, roasting and toasting. Learn about the seasonality of 19th-century ingredients and the equipment and methods for both cooking and preserving food. August 4 will focus on Spiced Vinegars, the condiment of the century.

August 6 National Night Out at First Southern Baptist Church in Mattoon 5:30pm

  • Join in honoring the First Responders of Mattoon. There will be fire trucks with hose demonstrations, police officers with K9s, food trucks, inflatables, and the tallest rock wall in the Midwest. This event if free and open to the public.
