Dear ones,

What a time it’s been in our community! So much goodness, so much richness and at the same time, so much loss. Five beautiful souls in the last few weeks, and that (as it should be) is where much of my love and care is going just now. Perhaps that is why I don’t have particularly eloquent words for you this week, but want to say that even in the midst of sorrow and loss, resurrection is always our story. While that’s hard to remember when we’re in the midst of grief or sorrow or loss, the truth is, ALL the things are true. Every new blade of grass, every new rosebud, every new word formed by precious children and grandchildren, every song, every new birth, every successful surgery, every hope–filled moment and all the rest are as true as are all of our sadnesses. God is at work in everything—that is something I try always to remember. And while I don’t believe God manipulates us or the world, don’t believe everything happens for a reason (if you do, please, please sit with me and tell me about that), don’t believe that God wills any of our suffering, I do believe that God redeems everything, and somehow turns it all to love.

You all care for and love each other so beautifully, and that is God’s Holy Spirit moving in you and through you in our place—St Barnabas. Don’t be shy. God’s Sweet Spirit is particularly needed these days, so pay attention to the myriad ways God’s Holy Spirit wants to move in and through you. This community is such a gift... thank you and bless you for loving and caring for each other and the wider world, so very well. I love how you do that...

Can’t wait to see you in church on Sunday!

Faithfully,

Karen†

wedding_ring_flowers1.jpg

Please join us this Sunday, June 30 at 2 p.m. to renew your wedding vows in the Service for the Renewal of Marriage Vows! Renew your sacred vows (or make the sacred vows you didn't get to make in your secular service) and remember and renew the holiness that is the sacrament of your marriage.

Bring a picture from your wedding day to share with everyone, and join us for wedding cake and bubbly after the service! Come to renew your own vows or to witness the vows of love and commitment renewed by members of our community. This is a particularly special service for families - Moms and Dads, come and bring your kids!

It is not too late to RSVP! If you would like to renew your vows, email etienna@stbbi.org so we have an idea of how many will be with us. And if you forget to rsvp, COME ANYWAY!

Summer Sunday Storytellers

Grades Pre-K through 5

Beginning this Sunday, June 30 at 10am, we will begin our Summer Sunday Storytellers series for kids in grades pre-K-5! This is a curriculum written and developed right here in our own diocese by Valerie Reinke, who is our Canon Missioner for Faith Formation. Children will come together to share a story, connect its message with our own faith, and create a fun craft together. The stories range from Saint Francis of Assisi, to The Three Questions, to Stone Soup, each exploring the world and how God, our faith, and the Holy Bible tie into it. We can’t wait to get started!

Bremerton Bridge Blast at St. Paul’s Episcopal

wedding-rings.jpg

Kitsap County Episcopalians, you are cordially invited to join St. Paul’s for the Bremerton Bridge Blast on Saturday, June 29!

St. Paul’s is blessed with a terrific view of the Manette Bridge and they have decided to share it with all of us! Before the firework show, they invite us to gather at 6pm for a potluck dinner. After that, we’ll pull out the guitars and song sheets and sing some songs and play board games until the main event. Around 10:15 pm we watch the fireworks blasted from the bridge.

All are welcome: invite your friends, bring a dish, games, an instrument (if you have one), and join our Kitsap County Episcopal brothers and sisters for some fellowship and fun! Questions? Call St. Paul’s at 360-377-0106.

Stewardship Corner

Have you, like I, noticed all the new faces at St. Barnabas? Do you wonder what is causing all this growth, particularly as most of what we hear is that churches are diminishing, closing, or combining to remain viable. At a Sunday service, notice how many new faces you see being welcomed by current members. At the “passing of the Peace” notice the enthusiasm of members participating in greeting. This activity is an active part of OUR Stewardship.

I do not consider “Stewardship” to be the Annual Fundraising Campaign. Stewardship is about involvement. Donating money is just one level of involvement. If you ask the members of St. Barnabas at an all parish meeting about how many donate time and participation, at least 75% of the people will raise their hands.

How did we get to this level of growth and participation? As I said to Reverend Karen, “This is because of you.” But of course she turns that around and says it’s because of us! Rev. Karen provides leadership, a warm welcome to new parishioners, enormous help to any parishioner who needs help at a troubling moment, and insights to better our understanding of scripture and how it becomes real for our lives. I'm sure you realize this is not an exhaustive list. Still, what matters most is that we ALL make up a community of faith that welcomes and values ALL people. We are blessed to be an active parish that is living into the true meaning of stewardship and sharing that lived experience with each other and the wider church.

Praying For Each Other:

The St. Barnabas Prayer Chain

Is there someone you would like us to pray for? Would you like to pray for others in our community? The St. Barnabas Prayer Chain consists of a group of volunteers who believe in the power of prayer and who willingly and regularly pray for others. Drucy Burnet Hodge (drucy15@msn.com or 206/780-2904) coordinates our chain, receiving requests for prayers, and sends those prayers out to the ones who pray. If you would like us to pray for you or someone you love, please contact Drucy. Prayer requests can be as simple as giving a first name and asking for prayers or more detailed, if you’d like. Parishioners remain on the prayer list for a month, non-parishioners for two weeks. The long-term prayer list is periodically reviewed and revised. If you would like to join us in praying for the people on our Prayer Chain, please email Drucy at drucy15@msn.com, and ask to be added to the list.

A Holy Waste of Time Retreat August 16–18

Young adults (20s & 30s) from across the Diocese of Olympia are invited August 16–18 to our annual weekend of fun and friendship at St. Andrew’s House, a cozy lodge situated with a view of the Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains beyond.

In the spirit of time–wasting, feel free to choose your own activities: kayak, paddleboard and swim the beautiful waters of the Puget Sound; take a hike on forest trails; or simply read at the lodge or sun on the deck. We’ll also offer activities like yoga, music, and art. Each evening we’ll gather to share and celebrate evening prayer and on Sunday our time together will culminate with a casual, collaborative Eucharist. Creative home–style cooking is a St. Andrew’s House tradition; meals include nurturing entrees of locally–sourced foods and delicious desserts.

Register now through July 15 for $95/person—which includes all food, lodging and activities. After July 15, registration is $110. Tent camping (includes meals, activities and facilities) is $50/person.
