The National Day of Racial Healing is a time to contemplate our shared values and create the blueprint together for #HowWeHeal from the effects of racism. Video: Healing from Racial Battle Fatigue.

Dr. William A. Smith

University of Utah

Description:

Dr. William A. Smith from the University of Utah provides a talk centering on the framework for Racial Battle Fatigue: what it is and more importantly how we can begin the process of healing from Racial Battle Fatigue. For over 20 years, Dr. Smith has worked to unite communities through ideas that racial oppressive systems cause emotional, physical, and social harm to those who experience the harsh realities of living within such a system. Dr. Smith provides an overview of how we can come together to begin to heal, knowing that our end goal is to heal communities but understanding that first we must learn to heal ourselves.

"DEI Deconstructed: Your No-Nonsense Guide to Doing the Work and Doing It Right"

Summary:

DEI Deconstructed analyzes how current methods and “best practices” leave marginalized people feeling frustrated and unconvinced of their leaders’ sincerity, and offers a roadmap that bridges the neatness of theory with the messiness of practice. Through embracing a pragmatic DEI approach drawing from cutting-edge research on organizational change, evidence-based practices, and incisive insights from a DEI strategist with experience working from the top-down and bottom-up alike, stakeholders at every level of an organization can become effective DEI changemakers. Nothing less than this is required to scale DEI from interpersonal teeth-pulling to true systemic change.

OPEN COURSE: Becoming a More Equitable Educator

presented by: MIT Open Learning Library

Description: Every day, teachers make thousands of decisions: what content to teach, what activities to assign, who to call on, how to respond to a student question, how to react to student behavior. These day-to-day decisions can have an enormous effect on the lives of young people, for good and ill. They can open new doors or cause lasting harm; they can make students feel seen and valued, or dampen their interest in school.

In this course, we will investigate day-to-day decisions and interactions between educators and students, rehearse responding to difficult scenarios, and develop a set of equity teaching mindsets and practices to support all of our learners, especially underserved students. *Please note, this is an open self-paced course.
