1. Presentation on the History and Source of Chicano Health Disparities in Maricopa County
Presented by Gilbert Arvizu, Steering Committee (SC) Member
| As part of the SC's continued efforts to weave health equity into HIPMC work, SC member Gilbert Arvizu led a presentation on the history and source of health disparities affecting Chicanos in Phoenix/Maricopa County. 2. Updates from the Health Equity Committee
Presented by Dr. Dulce Ruelas, Steering Committee (SC) Member and Health Equity Committee Chair
The HIPMC SC organized a standing Health Equity Committee to adopt a new, working health equity statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The statement is as follows:
- Health Equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. Achieving this requires focused and ongoing societal efforts to address historical and contemporary injustices; overcome economic, social, and other obstacles to health and healthcare; and eliminate preventable disparities.
The Committee’s four focus areas are capacity building, advocacy, data & messaging, and sense of belonging. To reach these focuses, the Committee aims to implement the following activities:
- Conduct intentional SC member recruitment
- Use QPM and email newsletter as tools for sharing health equity info and partner work
- Collect, track, and share Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) data in a transparent and accountable way to our partners and communities
- Build partner’s capacity through health equity trainings
Call-to-action: If there are other health equity activities you believe should be added, please contact Dr. Dulce Ruelas at Dulce.Ruelas@gcu.edu.

3. Networking Activity
Led by Steering Committee (SC) Members Dora Correal, Julie Garcia, and Paulette Rangel
| In this activity, attendees were split into groups based on the 2018-2023 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) priority areas: access to care, access to healthy food, and early childhood development. In each group, attendees shared how each priority area aligned with their work and exchanged ideas for improving and supporting current and future work.
