About Thanksgiving

In 1863 Abraham Lincoln, made a proclamation and scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November.

American Thanksgiving celebrations have become about cooking and sharing a meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple has become all but synonymous with the holiday. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate.

Parades have also become an integral part of the holiday in cities and towns across the United States. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the largest and most famous, attracting some 2 to 3 million spectators along its 2.5-mile route and drawing an enormous television audience. It typically features marching bands, performers, elaborate floats conveying various celebrities and giant balloons shaped like cartoon characters.

November is National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM)

November is National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM), a public awareness campaign designed to “Shine a Light” on the experiences of runaway and homeless youth (RHY) that too often remain invisible. It is also an opportunity to spotlight the resources available to support youth in crisis throughout the nation.

National Runaway Prevention Month is spearheaded by the National Runaway Safeline (NRS), with support from the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB).

Youth Homelessness

Research has found that homelessness among young people is a fluid experience. From couch surfing to sleeping on the streets or in a shelter, the vast majority of youth do not become homeless by choice. Specific subpopulations of youth and young adults face a higher risk for homelessness.

Many different factors contribute to youth homelessness. To learn more, click on the link below.

November is National Native American Heritage Month, 2022

Proclamation on National Native American Heritage Month

During National Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate Indigenous peoples past and present and rededicate ourselves to honoring Tribal sovereignty, promoting Tribal self-determination, and upholding the United States’ solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations.

America has not always delivered on its promise of equal dignity and respect for Native Americans. For centuries, broken treaties, dispossession of ancestral lands, and policies of assimilation and termination sought to decimate Native populations and their ways of life. But despite this painful history, Indigenous peoples, their governments, and their communities have persevered and flourished. As teachers and scholars, scientists and doctors, writers and artists, business leaders and elected officials, heroes in uniform, and so much more, they have made immeasurable contributions to our country’s progress.
