The National Suicide Prevention
Lifeline and 988

In July 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will transition its 1-800 number to 988, a new, nationwide three-digit number for suicide response and mental health crisis care.

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.

The current Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, even after 988 is launched nationally.
Stress Awareness
Stress Awareness Month has been recognized every April since 1992.

According to The American Institute of Stress, there are different types of stress that we experience. Some stress can have positive feelings attached and can also push us to be productive, like studying for a test or preparing for a meeting at work.

The stress that can cause negative feelings and physical/mental distress is what can become toxic for our bodies. Examples of both are below.
Eustress
Stress in daily life that has positive connotations such as:

  • Marriage
  • Promotion
  • Baby
  • Winning Money
  • New Friends
  • Graduation
Distress
Stress in daily life that has negative connotations such as:

  • Divorce
  • Punishment
  • Injury
  • Negative feelings
  • Financial Problems
  • Work Difficulties
Acute Stress
Fight or flight. The body prepares to defend itself. It takes about 90 minutes for the metabolism to return to normal when the response is over.
Chronic Stress
The cost of daily living: bills, kids, jobs…This is the stress we tend to ignore or push down. Left uncontrolled this stress affects your health- your body and your immune system.
Quick Stress Relief
One of the speediest and most reliable ways to stamp out stress is to engage one or more of your senses—sight, sound, taste, smell, touch—or through movement.
