February 2022 | Issue 7

From the Co-Presidents

Opening Luncheon Flourish Logo.JPG

Friends,

Hard for me to imagine it’s the 2nd month of 2022. Don’t know about you, but I’m still struggling to write 2022 on checks and forms.

Flourish……and Flexibility remain completely relevant themes for CPWC.

As many of you have seen, we made the decision to push our February 12, 2022, Masquerade Ball benefitting Great Prospects to Saturday, April 30. Hope you’ll buy tickets! Our Charity Committee, led by Sterling Lanken, has a very special, fun evening planned. See the link below for more information.

Likewise, our Downton Abbey Private Viewing has been postponed until Friday, May 20. The studio pushed the release date for the second time. See the link for more information.

Continued thanks to our interest group leaders for fabulous programming and meetings. If you haven’t been to any of our events, I assure you that you’re missing out. Check us out…….join the fun!

Best,

Jean Ann and Lesli

Hiking News

sweetwater-creek-state-park-1248228468-2621e519f9674038a46e38ef49c318da.jpg

Where: Sweetwater Creek State Park

1750 Mt. Vernon Road

Lithia Springs, GA 30122

When: Tuesday, February 8

Meet in the ACC parking lot at 8:30 am sharp to carpool. ( We meet in the back of the lot on your right as you face the clubhouse)

Please allow 30-45 minutes to drive to the trailhead. There is a $5 fee per car to park.

What: We will hike the 5 mile White Trail loop. It is considered moderate to difficult and passes through some of the most remote areas of the park. It intersects with the Red Trail (which we hiked in June!) at the overlook of the New Manchester mill ruins. The White Trail winds through several lovely stream coves and follows the ridges overlooking Sweetwater Creek. It's recommended to plan on 2-3 hours for this hike.

Plan to dress in layers, wear hiking boots, bring walking sticks if you use them, and bring a snack and water. Also, bring a sack lunch for after the hike. There are picnic tables available, as well as a bathroom in the visitor center.

RSVP to Jean if you would like to join this hike.

See you on the trail!

Gardening Interest Group

Asclepias tuberosa 450px.jpg

Upcoming Events

The ladies of the CPWC Garden Group have started lining up to act for Monarchs! These much-beloved butterflies are in serious decline, at only 20% of the population reported in the 1990s. There are many reasons for the loss, but there are two things we can do, with a limited amount of effort, to help them.

  1.  No spraying of insecticides, including mosquito spraying.
  2.  Plant butterfly weed - Asclepias - which is the ONLY food source for the Monarch caterpillars.

If each of us found a sunny corner of our gardens to plant at least three small Asclepias, we could enhance the whole neighborhood for these visitors. There are already butterfly weed plantings at McFarlane, so installing additional plants in the neighborhood would make the whole area more Monarch friendly. The plants are perennial, returning late in the spring each year, so when planting they need to be marked to prevent them from being dug up by mistake.

The plants will be 5" x 2" square landscape plugs - so easy to plant. A set of three is only $5. The order has to be placed early to have these contract-grown for us by the Chattahoochee Nature Center. They will be ready in mid-May. Orders have been coming in from Garden Group members since January, but a limited number of sets are still available.

April 13, 2022   10 a.m. A visit to the Goizueta Gardens of the Atlanta History Center. Group tickets will be arranged for a group of 10 paid visitors, with applicable rates for 65+ and adults - of course, History Center members are free. All the gardens and buildings are included in the self-guided visit.

Please contact Karin Guzy with questions or comments.

IMG_1212.jpg

The CPWC Bridge Club needs your help. Due to attrition caused by Covid and by members moving, our membership is down to only 10 players. Since the game of bridge requires a multiple of 4 players, we are recruiting new bridge players to join us.

If you would like more information, please contact Melissa Nicol at 770-541-6168 or mahanmelissa@aol.com. Thanks!
