2024 AIA Indiana Design and Service Awards Call for Submissions – All AIA Indiana member architects in good standing who have led the design of completed projects inside or outside of Indiana are invited to compete for Honor, Merit, and Citation Design Awards. Also, AIA member architects outside of Indiana in good standing and who are responsible for the lead role in designing projects located in Indiana are invited to compete. If a project had both a design architect and an architect-of-record, submissions must include the names of both. The awards will be presented during the AIA Indiana Convention on Friday, August 16 at the 16 Tech Innovation District, in downtown Indianapolis. AIA Indiana AXP Friendly Firm Recognition - The AIA Indiana AXP Friendly Firm award is a newly established annual designation approved by the AIA Indiana Board of Directors. This accolade aims to provide a clearer, more accessible route for individuals pursuing licensure. Participation in this program is voluntary. Applications for the AXP Friendly Firm program will be open annually from April 1 to May 30. AXP Friendly and Exemplary Firms will be recognized at the AIA Indiana Convention, be featured on the AIA Indiana Website, and may use the AXP Friendly Logo or AXP Exemplary Logo for marketing purposes in the year shown on the logo. 2025 AIA Indiana Executive Committee - Call for Candidates - AIA Indiana is seeking expressions of interest from AIA Indianapolis members interested in a leadership position on the AIA Indiana Executive Committee. The position of Secretary for 2025 will be open, with preference given to an AIA Indianapolis Section member to maintain geographic balance on the Executive Committee. This is a one-year term that traditionally leads to ongoing service in subsequent years as Treasurer, President-Elect and then President of AIA Indiana. Architect members interested in the Secretary position should submit a letter of interest to AIA Indiana Executive Director Jason Shelley, Hon. AIA, jshelley@aiaindiana.org, no later than June 10. All letters of interest will be considered by the 2024 AIA Indiana Nominating Committee. The 2024 AIA Indiana Nominating Committee was selected by the AIA Indiana Board of Directors at their May 21, 2024 board meeting. AIA Indiana Christopher Kelley Leadership Development (CKLDP) Program - The application window for year six of the AIA Indiana CKDLP will open on June 5. | | Safety Assessment Program (SAP) Evaluator Training 2024 - These sessions, which are scheduled for June 26-27, play a vital role in equipping volunteers with the necessary skills and knowledge to support local governments in assessing the safety of their built environment following a disaster. The AIA Disaster Assistance Program, of which SAP is a cornerstone, offers leadership, advocacy, and training opportunities for architects interested in lending their expertise during crises. The workshop will cover rapid damage assessment techniques for structures affected by earthquakes, wind, and water, ensuring participants are capable of consistently and safely evaluating habitability. In Memoriam - Janice Shimizu, AIA passed away on April 11, 2024. As an architecture educator at Ball State University, Janice taught, mentored, and inspired hundreds of students over decades. In Memoriam - Sallie Rowland passed away on May 2, 2024. She founded Rowland Design in 1968 and led the company to remarkable success. Throughout her career, she combined artistic talent, business acumen, and warm, nurturing leadership. Passionate about historic preservation, Sallie served on the board of the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana and was the first woman to preside over the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission. Her efforts to challenge the prevailing bulldozer mentality led to the designation of several historic districts and the preservation of many historic structures. She will be profoundly missed. ABI April 2024 - Architecture firm billings remained soft in April, with an AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score of 48.3 for the month. The score rose from 43.6 in March but still indicates that billings continue to decline at most architecture firms. While the value of newly signed design contracts dipped slightly in April, there remains interest from clients as inquiries into new projects continue to increase. CLICK HERE to learn more.
