African food prices soaring amid Ukraine war

Wheat, gas, and gasoline prices are soaring on Africa and things are getting worse because of Russia's war on Ukraine. The situation is worrying not only because of price, but also because of unavailability as many suppliers had already reduced their contracted quantities. South Africans are forced to use their savings and loans to meet the rising cost of living. The lack of wheat supplies from Ukraine had worsened the food crisis. About 6 million people are already affected by food insecurity, including 1.4 million children. More than 500,000 people left their homes this year alone because of the drought.

SA has experienced rain increases and most dams are full, yet a national water crisis persists

Since October 2021, South Africa has received above average rainfall leading to an increase in country's national average water levels. Water stored in reservoirs rose from 84.6% to 88.7% by the December of 2021. Although water availability is increasing, some parts of South Africa have not been recovered from the effects of drought which has been ongoing since 2015. Eastern Cape communities are in short of water shortages even though major dams in other parts of the country are full. This shows that despite of getting good rainfall over the summer 2021, the country's water resources are still under continued pressure.

By: Declan ConwayEmma Archer van GarderenDelphine DeryngSteve DorlingTobias KruegerWillem LandmanBruce LankfordKaren LebekTim OsbornClaudia RinglerJames ThurlowTingju Zhu & Carole Dalin

This paper states there is strong evidence of the effects of individual climate anomalies in South Africa, but association between national rainfall, gross domestic product, and crop production is relatively weak. The use of various climate models project shows the decrease in annual precipitation by 20% by the year 2080's and these changes is still projected to impact the reduced availability of water and crop yields in higher capacity. The authors recommended three key political and economic instruments that could improve this scenario: the Southern Development Community, the Southern African Power Pool, and trade of agricultural products amounting to significant transfer of embedded water.
