Off- and Weak-Grid Appliance Market in Nigeria

Nigeria has the biggest potential for becoming the largest off-grid appliance market in the future. However, there is a lack of sufficient data regarding off-grid appliances, because of which manufacturers and policymakers are not able to make informed policy decisions and evaluate high-quality products sold in their region. Addressing this issue, Efficiency for Access has worked on collecting data on off-grid appliances in Nigeria which analyzed four types of off-grid appliances; TVs, fans, refrigerators, and SWPs. The work has further expanded to gather data on other off-grid appliances found in the market and evaluate the type of connectors or plugs integrated into or sold with the product.

Kenya's Mango Export Business to Resume After Eight Years of Ban

Eight years ago, Kenya went into the self-imposed ban of mango shipment to the European Union (EU) market after a fruit fly outbreak. Now, the EU has approved the resumption of mango export, after test results showed the decreased level of fruit flies. Various market standards such as certification protocol are being developed to ensure mango exports are conducted with zero pests. The resumption is to start from September 2021 and is expected to boost the livelihood of local families that depend on the mango market, eventually contributing to the country's economy.

South Africa Water Shortage 2021

The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa is at the edge of water scarcity. The municipality consists of the two biggest dams; Kouga Dam and Impofu dam, which are running dry due to drought. The community residents have accused their government of lacking good water infrastructure and management measures. Currently, there are only two sources of water supply in the province, one from government-supplied regular tanks and the second from the Nooitgedacht Water Scheme.

Therefore, this study conducts literature review in combine with analysis of WEF nexus model to develop a Theory of Change for operationalizing the approach in the context of Southern Africa. Results demonstrates that the WEF nexus operationalization outcomes are linked to Sustainable Development Goals 2 (zero hunger), 6 (clean water and sanitation), and 7 (affordable and clean energy), with synergies to SDGs 1 (no poverty), 5 (gender equality), 8 (decent work and economic growth), 12 (responsible consumption and production), 13 (climate action), 14 (life below water), and 15 (life on land).
