Akers, Daneen. Holy Troublemakers & Unconventional Saints. [Asheville, NC], Watchfire Media, 2019. (J_200.922 Akers – Children’s Books)
This beautifully illustrated children's book tells the stories of people of faith working for more love and justice in their corners of the world, even when that means rocking the religious boat. With original portraits from more than two dozen artists and engaging profiles of 36 people from different faiths and different eras, these are stories that inspire, educate, challenge, and encourage. Some are well known, but the deep faith motivating their work is lesser known. Others are less known, such as Bayard Rustin, an American Quaker whose role in the civil rights movement of the 1960s is often downplayed because he was gay. In particular, the book emphasizes stories of women, LGBTQ people, people of color, Indigenous people, and others who are too often written out of religious narratives. These stories move us towards more love and a faith that works for the common good of us all.
The Resource Center’s Online Catalog description of the book contains a complete list of all the people whose stories are included. Numerous full text sample profiles are on the publisher’s website.
A 12 (or more) lesson story-based digital curriculum is available for purchase from the publisher, with pricing for either home or church use. Designed for middle-grade children (ages 8–14) it includes activity options for younger and older participants. This companion curriculum is NOT owned by the Resource Center.

Mental Health in the Digital Age:
From Challenges to Solutions
Bethesda Presbyterian Church invites the community to a panel discussion on the
growing mental health crisis, exacerbated by the pandemic and the impact of social media. This event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 431 Hetty Hill St., Gaffney, S.C.
Recent studies show a significant rise in mental health issues, particularly among young people, following the pandemic. More than 20% of American adults experience some form of mental illness each year, and more than half do not receive treatment. Social media contributes significantly to anxiety and depression,
especially among youth, leading to increased suicide rates.
