Thank you and Farewell!

Mrs. Emma Deer has been a Graduate Assistant in the Dean’s Office for the past two years and has been an invaluable resource in assisting students and faculty

with academic information in regard to degree plans,

progress towards degree completion, graduation, commencement,

as well as selflessly assisting with all of the events our office manages.

TCFA Beef Showcase

Feedyard Carcass Steer Educational Contest

Texas Cattle Feeders Association hosted their Annual Beef Showcase

in the Happy State Bank Academic and Research Building on Tuesday, September 19th.

Participants competed in steer judging from videos and a carcass match,

a beef industry knowledge and skills contest, a beef harvest and fabrication presentation,

a Texas Beef Council Chef presentation,

and ended the day with a reception and awards presentation!

Ultrasound Certification Event

for International Ultrasound Technicians

Dr. Ty Lawrence, Caviness Davis Distinguished Chair in Meat Science

and Professor of Animal Science and Director of the Beef Carcass Research Center (BCRC)

and Dr. Tommy Perkins, Associate Professor of Animal Science and Dean Hawkins Chair in Cow/Calf Mgt., hosted the 2023 Ultrasound Guidelines Council (UGC) Field Certification.

The event boasted 51 large animal body composition ultrasound technicians

who participated in the exam. Two technicians were from Brazil, two from Canada

and the remainder were from various states in the US. Each technician had to ultrasound

40 head of cattle, which were later harvested at the Tyson Plant in Amarillo.

The WTAMU Beef Carcass Research Center (BCRC) team collected the carcass data

so it could be used to determine the pass/fail status of the participants.

The technicians represented one of three labs: National CUP Lab from Iowa, International Livestock Image Analysis Lab from Arkansas and UltraInsights Lab from Colorado.

This event included about 100 volunteers made up of 15 WT graduate students,

80 undergraduate students and two Oklahoma high school student recruits.

"I am always amazed at the excellent work

our students offer for these very important beef industry events.

They don’t get paid but purely volunteer

their time for the experience they gain from helping.

The participants always complement

our hard-working students for their work ethic, courteousness and positive attitude.

We could not successfully pull off this event without the help of these great students."

-Dr. Tommy Perkins
