Dr. Flynn Published: Chemist Brewers

Dr. Nick Flynn, Professor of Biochemistry, recently had a book published

through De Gruyter Publishing,

Chemist Brewers: Insights from Chemists

and Biologists in the Brewing Industry.

This book interviews professionals

in the brewing industry looking at

the cross-section between lab managers

and brewery staff to brewery founder.

Dr. Flynn began his brewing career in 1993, after enjoying a Shiner Bock.

Two years later, he brewed the beer

for his wedding.

Dr. Flynn is a member

of the American Society

of Brewing Chemists,

the American Homebrewers Association,

and serves as the President of the Amarillo High Plains Drafters Homebrew Club.

Dr. Samuelson: Critical Feedlot Cattle Research

Dr. Kendall Samuelson, Associate Professor of Animal Science,

was recently awarded $300,0000 by the International Consortium

for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Agriculture, which will be matched by WT.

This grant supports Dr. Samuelson's efforts in evaluating the variability

in liver abscess development in feedlot cattle

raised in conventional beef verses dairy management systems.

"We are thankful to work with funding agencies, like the Foundation for Food

and Agriculture Research and the International Consortium for Antimicrobial Stewardship

in Agriculture, that enable us to complete industry-relevant research

which provides critical information for our stakeholders

in the fed-beef industry and commercial beef processors."

A Moment with Mrs. Bachman

Pond's Ponder

February has 29 days this year - it's a leap year!

What's that all about?

Our physics and mathematics colleagues can provide great detail

describing how the 365-day rotation around the sun becomes 366

to keep our annual calendar stable.

The bottom line is we all get one more day in the month of February every four years

and extra time is the important outcome.

Unfortunately, data does not indicate more productivity.

The extra 24 hours we receive each leap year is totally consumed by time wasted

on Presidential election commercials because leap year and elections are linked.

This year, let's reduce the distractions

and effectively utilize the precious gift of an extra day!

Why February routinely has only 28 days will be covered later in the month.
