January 16- 23:
Informational Math Nights for 5th and 6th grade parents. These sessions will help parents make informed decisions about what option is best for their student when it comes to placement in math courses. There will be a discussion of the recommended student placement in Math 6, Honor 6/7, and Compacted 7/8, as well as an explanation about the secondary math course sequence. Parents may attend any of the following remaining math meetings:
- Roosevelt Elementary: January 16, Library, 4:00 - 4:30 pm
- Les Bois Jr. High: January 16, Library, 6:30 - 7:00 pm
- South Jr. High: January 17, Library, 6:30 - 7:00 pm
- Highlands Elementary: January 18, Library, 6:30 - 7:00 pm

Montessori Program will hold an Information Night for parents interested in the program, 5:00 p.m. in the Library at Liberty Elementary School, 1740 E. Bergeson St. Boise.
January 19: End of First Semester - Early Release K-6
January 19: Boise High School Lady Braves 10th Annual Pink Zone Event to be held during basketball games at Boise High on Friday, January 19th vs. the Capital Eagles. In the first nine years, Boise High is proud to report that this fundraiser has raised over $14,000 for the
Boise chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The entire gym will be festively decked out in pink, and players are also working hard for a really great cause. Simplot has helped sponsor the event, furnishing pink t-shirts that will be sold to fans for $5 each. All money from these sales, as well as the raffle, will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Game times on the 19th are 4:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

The Idaho STEM Action Center would like to invite students, families, and community members to join us January 23rd for STEM Matters 2017 at the Idaho State Capitol Building. STEM Matters is a free hands-on educational event that will showcase students, community members, and companies that are making a positive impact on STEM education in Idaho.
Highlights Include:
- FREE EVENT!
- Hands-on STEM activities for kids like building BristleBots, lots of LEGOS, exploring virtual reality, circuits and slime and the opportunity to explore the KBOI state of the art new Weather Vehicle and the STEMBus! The National Guard is bringing a huge Fire Truck, a CST Mobile Lab and an HMMWV!
- Showcase of Idaho student STEM projects
- Watch Lt. Governor Little speak on the importance of STEM
- Meet Idaho legislators and so much more!

January 23:
The family of acclaimed jazz pianist and Borah High School graduate Paul Tillotson, who tragically passed away in 2016, today announced that the annual Paul Tillotson Music Scholarship Benefit Concert will be held Tuesday, January 23, at 7:00 pm in the Borah High School Auditorium. Music will be performed by the legendary local jazz group, The Frim Fram 4, along with the Borah Jazz Band, Choir and Orchestra.
Established in 2001, the Paul Tillotson Music Scholarship awards a $1,000 scholarship to a Borah High School student interested in pursuing music in college. Earlier this year, thanks to the combination of donors, posthumous events and a donation from Paul’s estate, the scholarship endowment fund reached Paul’s goal of $100,000, ensuring opportunities for students for years to come.
Paul’s wife, Janie Tillotson, said, “Paul believed that it was his mission to play great improvised music, deeply touching the souls of audiences around the world, and spreading the joy that is created while making music that comes from love.”
The annual benefit concert is the culmination of a day of clinics featuring local musicians working with Borah music students.
“The combination of working with the students during the day and then performing at night offers real world music experience to the students,” said Janie Tillotson. “It also shows them that it is possible to fulfill your dreams of being a successful, professional musician. The money that the scholarship recipient receives can help them actually make their dreams come true.”

Dennis Technical Education Center, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., 8201 W. Victory Rd., Boise. Parents and students are invited to attend and learn more about this state-of-the-art Career Technical Education Program. Secondary students from across the Treasure Valley may enroll in Dennis Technical Education Center programs. DTEC offers nearly 20 career technical education programs and more programs will soon be added with work well underway to expand the Center to include Electrical, Plumbing, and Heating & Air Conditioning training programs.

Capital High School Student Featured by Idaho ED News: Capital High School Senior Ayla Thayer (pictured) was recently featured in an
online article published by Idaho ED News' Andrew Reed. The inspirational story showcases Thayer's determination and drive to succeed in school and in life. Ayla's focus is to have a career in the military and attend West Point Military Academy.

Timberline High Students Recognized: Over the winter holliday break, Timberline High's Debate and Speech Team competed at a tournament at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. They competed against teams from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, California, Arizona, and Florida.
Out of Timberline's 12 competitors, 5 of them received trophies:
- Jack Burum, 1st in Editorial Commentary
- Andrea Hagge, Finalist in Editorial Commentary
- Olivia Redmond, Finalist in Editorial Commentary
- Bridget Fitzpatrick, Finalist in Congressional Debate
- Ian Hadrick, Octafinalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate

East Junior High School Students Recognized for Community Service:
Members of the National Junior High School Honor Society at East Junior High School recently helped collect money and gift cards for the foster children in Ada county. The Giving Tree committee members presented $1,400 worth of gift cards to representatives from the Department of Health and Welfare so they could be distributed before the holidays.

District Educator Recognized: Dr. Brian Whitney, STEM Specialist at Hidden Springs Elementary School (pictured), was recently selected by
STEM Revolution to be one of eight educators from across the United States to deliver STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math) professional development to educators in the United Arab Emirates. STEM Revolution's team is supporting the UAE's Ministry of Education with STREAM implementation across all Ministry of Education schools. Phase one of the training will take place over five days and will focus on STREAM misconceptions, collaborative learning, project based learning, reasons to use manipulatives, and how to integrate art and reading into STEM teaching and learning. This experience will build international connections, relationships, and positively influence teachers and students both in the UAE and the Boise School District.

Students - Looking For Something To Do On The Weekends?
Open Gym program runs on Saturday and Sunday at a number of Boise School District schools. Open Gym is presented by the Boise Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with the Boise School District. Participating schools include Garfield and Hawthorne elementary schools (K-6 children only) each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Les Bois, East, South & West junior high schools (7-12 students only) at various times on Saturday and Sunday.
