March 5:
To celebrate Idaho Day, a number of schools in the Boise School District will hold special events/activities. For example, Lowell Elementary School will host a Hoedown from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. featuring live square dancing, square dance calling, music, food and fun! During its 2014 Session, the Idaho Legislature established an official Idaho Day to be observed each year on March 4th to commemorate the creation of Idaho by President Abraham Lincoln on that day in 1863. It will be the day when state and local agencies, historical societies, schools, Indian tribes, civic groups, chambers of commerce, clubs, the media, and Idaho citizens in general can celebrate and educate about Idaho, her culture, her history, her diversity, her beauty, her resources and her greatness.

March 5 - 9: Celebrate National School Breakfast Week (NSBW), March 5-9, 2018 with Boise School District, Food & Nutrition Department. NSBW was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the School Breakfast Program. Since that time, studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to: Score higher on standardized tests, have better concentrations, memory and alertness.

March 8: Boise District's Treasure Valley Math & Science Center will be hosting the first of two 'Orientation Nights' for families who are interested in learning more about the Center as a possible educational option for their children.
TVMSC is a magnet school program that offers a seamless, integrated progression of challenging mathematics and science courses for high potential students in multi-age cohorts from 7th through 12th grades. Students attend TVMSC for a portion of each school day and return to their neighborhood school for their non-STEM courses. Orientation Night will be held in the Large Gym at Riverglen Jr. High from 7:00p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Families will be provided an overview of the program, will visit the classrooms and will have an opportunity to have questions about the program addressed.

March 8: To better serve our students and families, Boise School District is moving to an online registration system starting with 2018 Kindergarten Open House/Registration.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to use this new Online Registration Process
before
Kindergarten Open House/Registration on Thursday, March 8, 2018. By doing so, you’ll expedite the Kindergarten registration process and be able to spend more time on March 8th meeting your child’s dedicated teachers and staff.

Recipients are predominantly high school students from the Boise School District. Chris Taylor, science and social studies supervisor for the Boise School District, said “We are thrilled to have our students participate in this nonpartisan, multigenerational educational event.”
The Boise Chapter of
Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) is hosting the annual Pacific Northwest Regional conference. Of the approximately 6,000 members across the region; which includes Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon and Washington, Idaho has over 1,000 CCL members. Conference attendance is estimated at 125, in addition to the 60 plus scholarship attendees. Individuals are coming from as far away as Alaska and as near as Boise.
The agenda includes four general sessions and 12 different one-hour break-out sessions offered during the concurrent time block on Saturday afternoon. The
conference web page offers more details, as does the
conference agenda. There is a special session open to the public, with no registration fee, on Saturday afternoon, titled Engaging Businesses in Climate Action.

March 10: Treasure Valley Mathematics & Science Center (TVMSC) will hold the first of two Applicant Screenings. The screening occurs from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Riverglen Junior High School's Cafeteria. For more information about the Application Process, please visit
TVMSC's webpage. On the Application Process web page there are forms to submit in order to reserve a space on one of the two testing days. There are additional forms available for obtaining the 'Teacher Recommendations' for your child. All applicants must participate in one of the two screening days and must submit the recommendation forms before the applicant can be considered for entrance to TVMSC for 2018 - 2019.

You are warmly invited to attend the inaugural Gold and Black Gala on March 16 at the brand new Boise Centre East at Boise Centre on the Grove... Enjoy a three-course plated dinner, no-host bar, and entertainment featuring CHS singers and musicians as well as the famed auctioneer Kevin Troutt. Fundraising will benefit Capital High School's Three As: Academics, Athletics, and Activities; and three Distinguished Alumni will be recognized as we celebrate the past, present, and future of CHS. The Gala Committee is working on incredible silent and live auction items including a guided fly fishing expedition with pro Brett Bishop, “Coffee with Kustra” (BSU President Bob Kustra), “Chai with Chuck” (UI President Chuck Staben), and an Elton John VIP concert and hotel package to name just a few!

March 17:
North Junior High School will host the first-ever Idaho Battle of the Books Tournament from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a new and growing program across all of Idaho, started last year at North. This year's event will feature student teams from North, Riverglen, East and Fairmont junior high schools, competing in teams of 4 students each in a reading-based program that uses competition to encourage students to read more books! This is the second year of the program at North, but the first year at the other schools, and next year the plan is to add several West Ada schools, as well as schools from other parts of Idaho. Author Jennifer A. Nielsen will be the guest of honor.
Rediscovered Books will be selling books that day (Nielsen will be signing), and
Scotty's Hot Dog cart will available for those in attendance.

Community Schools - A Good Reason to Feel Good About Your Community!: A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health & social services, youth & community development & family engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families & healthier communities.
The following five Boise School District schools, Frank Church, Garfield, Morley Nelson, Whitney and Whittier have been designated as Community Schools. Each will have dedicated space in the school and a staff assigned to plan, organize and implement the Community School model in a way that best serves each school’s neighborhood.
Services provided by Community Schools may include parenting information and support, help getting food and clothing, early childhood resources and volunteer opportunities for community members. Additional resources such as resume and job-seeking skills, computer access and agency referrals may be available. This annual STEM-based competition serves as another example of why your Boise School District is your first choice for STEM Education. Students Qualify for Idaho State Geography Bee: Six students from the Boise School District (pictured below) have qualified for the
2018 Idaho State Geography Bee that will take place at Brigham Young University-Idaho in Rexburg, ID on April 6, 2018.
Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge.

Borah High School Student and Teacher Recognized: Borah High School senior Kim Huynh (pictured left in center) has received the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing. She is one of just 6 women selected as an Idaho Affiliate Award Winner from the state of Idaho! She was honored Thursday March 1, 2018 at the Computer Science building on Boise State University's downtown campus. Huynh was honorable mention last year and her collective awards earned her a $1500 per year scholarship to BSU.

Science, Music, Art -- and Robots -- Highlight February Patrons’ Tour
: On Thursday, February 22nd, Boise School supporters took part in the District’s ongoing Patrons’ Tour program. Highlights of the visit to Treasure Valley Math and Science Center (TVMSC) and Riverglen Junior High School included a demonstration from “Team Tator” TVMSC’s Robotics club, as well as visits to computer science, ceramics and choir classrooms.
During the tour, the Micron Foundation presented a check for $50,000 toward the expansion science lab space at TVMSC. The improvements will dramatically expand the range of labs and activities that students can safely participate in for accelerated and AP-level classes in biology, environmental science, and anatomy & physiology.

Hidden Springs Elementary Wins 5th/6th Grade Boys Basketball City Championship
: The Boys 5th/6th Grade Basketball City Championship game was played on February 26, 2018 at Hidden Springs Elementary School. The two teams that played were Hidden Springs vs. White Pine. Hidden Springs won the City Championship. Pictured is the winning team, with Coach Jahan Borjian on the left and Coach Mike Nance on the right.

Boise High Team Wins Regional Science Bowl: Boise High Science Bowl team recently won the Western Regional Science Bowl and will now represent the state of Idaho in Washington, D.C. at the
National Science Bowl. The team consists of the following students: Jay Mouli, Tony Brar, Anthony Luo
Brynne Coulam, and Siddharth Naidu. The team went undefeated in the double-elimination tournament!

Boise High School Students Earn Top Prizes in PSA Contest: Two Boise High School students were recently recognized by the Women's and Children's Alliance for winning the WCA's Healthy Relationship Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest. Adam Bass (senior) won first place and a $100 cash prize. Sam Herbold (junior) won second place and a $50 cash prize.

North Junior High School Teacher Recognized: Jake Miller (pictured), an eighth grade physical education teacher at North Junior High School, has been nominated for the 2017-2018 national
LifeChanger of the Year Award. Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, LifeChanger of the Year recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 educators and school district employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.
Miller has been an eighth grade physical education teacher for over ten years and was nominated by his mother-in-law, Kathy Olson. He is dedicated to giving his students his energy to not only build their bodies, but their minds as well. Besides his daily classes, Miller organizes overnight adventure experiences, hoping to teach them life skills in the outdoors of Idaho. He has also coached football, basketball, and track over the years.

Special Education Teacher Receives National Recognition: Riverglen Junior High School Special Education Teacher Kalley Malone (pictured right) has received national recognition for her research that impacts student achievement in special education. Malone recently returned from the Council for Exceptional Children's national conference in Tampa, Florida where she presented the findings of her research titled, Facilitating Inclusion of Students with Intellectual Disabilities. Ms. Malone, under the supervision of Dr. Julie Fodor University of Idaho (pictured left), facilitated peer-mediated interventions that fostered supportive relationships between special education students and general education students that resulted in an increase in the communication, academic engagement and story comprehension skills of her students.

Principal Recognized: Curtis Anderson (pictured), principal, Mountain View Elementary, has been awarded the 2018 Idaho Gem Award: Distinguished Service category presented by the Idaho Association of Elementary School Principals. Mr. Anderson has served as Principal at Mountain View Elementary School in the Boise School District for the past 6 years. Mr. Anderson will be formally recognized for this achievement during the 2018 IASA Summer Leadership Conference awards luncheon at the Boise Centre on August 2, 2018.

Boise School District Teams Up with Idaho Power and School Districts Throughout Idaho & Oregon to Save Energy:
Your Boise School District is working to save energy. Throughout 2017, Boise School District was engaged in a Continous Energy Improvement (CEI) Cohort for Schools program through Idaho Power. The cohort brought together superintendents, principals, teachers and volunteers from school districts in Idaho and eastern Oregon to share knowledge on energy saving opportunities.

IASA, ISBA & IEA Opposed to Private School Vouchers: The three major education stakeholder groups in Idaho - the Idaho Association of School Administrators, Idaho School Boards Association and Idaho Education Association are on record opposing private school vouchers. In a recent editorial posted on
Idaho Education News, the three groups are unanimous in their position that private school voucher legislation currently before the Idaho Legislature will negatively impact Idaho's public schools and the children they serve.
