August 2024 Issue

School Back in Session

As the new school year begins on August 20th, it's important to be mindful of the increased traffic and busier schedules. When heading out, allot extra time for your commute and remember to drive cautiously.

Here are some important reminders:

  • When you encounter a school bus loading or unloading students, always leave enough room for the bus and be sure to come to a complete stop. It's crucial for the safety of the children.
  • When approaching crosswalks near schools, pay close attention and be prepared to stop for children and staff crossing the road. Always give them the right of way.
  • In school speed zones, adhere to the posted speed limits. These limits are put in place to ensure the safety of everyone in the school vicinity, so it's important to follow them diligently.

The Arts Shine in Bixby

Once again, Bixby is making history, this time on behalf of Play Me Tulsa.

The arts have always played an important role in Bixby, during the Green Corn Festival, the Bixby Art student entered the Optimist Club’s Poster contest. The winning poster is made into that year’s Green Corn T-Shirt. This year the High School Art department were involved in Play Me Tulsa; they were commissioned to paint a piano for Mayfest. The piano is back home now for all to enjoy through the end of September. The piano is at the Bixby Historical Society and sits proudly under the portico at Plummer’s Station, 27 E. Needles Ave., for everyone to enjoy and play a tune. From the Doughnut Shop Boys, Cory Kent White, to the Bixby Choir, music and art will always be a major part of the history of Bixby.

The piano is there for anyone and everyone to enjoy. Bring yourself or a group and play a tune. The piano is outside, and you may visit anytime during the day or evening. For more information call 918-366-1200. For information on Play Me Tulsa go playmetulsa.com.

Keep Pets Safe in the Summer Heat

Remember these tips for keeping your pets safe in hotter weather:

  • Talk to your veterinarian about warm weather risks for pets, especially if you plan to travel with them
  • Ensure your pets have access to fresh water and shade when outside
  • Learn how to recognize signs of heat stress in your pets
  • If possible, leave your pets at home instead of taking them out with you
  • Provide different temperature zones within your house for your pet’s comfort
  • Never leave a pet in the car, even in the shade or with windows cracked
  • Take walks, hikes, or runs with your pet during cooler hours of the day
  • Avoid hot surfaces like asphalt that can burn your pet’s paws
  • Consult your veterinarian before starting an exercise program for your pet, especially if they are overweight or a short-nosed breed.
