The 28th Annual Battle of the Books!

130 students from each elementary school,

the Fine Arts Academy, and Atascadero Middle School gathered at the Lake Pavilion

last Friday to participate.

Students made new friends, celebrated their

efforts towards reading, and displayed excellent teamwork. Miss Sally from the Atascadero Public Library joined us to talk about the Summer Reading Program, Mr. Butler was an excellent reader for our Grand Finale, and Kiwanis treated us to a delicious lunch! District Librarian Kris Bell would like to send out a gracious thank you to all the principals, teachers, staff, library technicians, and parents who have kept this program

running all these years.

Great job, AUSD readers!

The Atascadero Rotary Club hosts annual essay contest

for all 8th grade students!

Renee Betz took home the

first-place prize!

This year’s winners were celebrated at

a special luncheon held at the Atascadero Unified School District (AUSD) office on May 9th. Superintendent Tom Butler and Rotary President Robert Borish awarded the winners

with their cash prizes.

Renee Betz took home the first-place prize,

Kaylee Holder earned second place, and

Paloma Rodriguez secured third place!

Mrs. Medina (math intervention coordinator), Miss Joann (math instructional aide), and Ms. Holmes (principal) honored Cuesta College Corps interns, Kenni Diaz and Ana Garcia! These two have devoted over 450 volunteer hours supporting students and staff these past two years! Their bi-lingual skills really assisted English learners and their families!

In a partnership between

AHS and ACE Academy,

English teachers Lauren Chambers, and Meg Higdon along with District Librarian Kris Bell and

AHS Library Technician

Noelle Holden presented the

2nd annual Living Library.

Inspired by NPR's StoryCorps project (promoting intergenerational storytelling) and programs

like The Human Library (promoting learning from real people's stories), students from

the ACE program and Advanced English 1 classes had the opportunity to "check out" a person instead of a book; interviewing members of our staff, district office, school board, and guests from our community at large.

They engaged in an exercise of active listening and sharing life stories with each other.

A special thank you to everyone who

 donated their time.

The Santa Margarita Elementary School Garden Club held its second annual butterfly release assembly on Wednesday.

With the help of the school's PTA, the Garden Club provided a butterfly grow kit to each of its 12 classrooms with ten caterpillars for each class to monitor.

On Wednesday, the students released the hatched butterflies into the garden.

"Garden Club helps build a sense of community among every student here on our campus and everyone is always really excited to get involved, and it's really fun to have all these great kids out here helping us make something for not just us, but for the other kids that are coming after them," said Katherine Jonsson, Garden Club Advisor.

It was a beautiful night honoring our Seniors here at Alternative Education

Thank you for your generosity and hard work to offer these scholarships to our young people. I feel thankful to be part of such a wonderful community.
