FAU-BOCA LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE presents the following:

CELEBRATING WOMEN SINGER-SONGWRITERS OF THE 60s & 70s

Multimedia Musical Lecture and Sing-Along by PINK SLIP DUO

Tuesday, MARCH 5, 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm ET

$35/ Member; $40/Non-Member; all but $5 goes to the Lifelong Learning program

at Florida Atlantic University (FAU Boca)

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Friedberg Auditorium

777 Glades Road, Boca Raton 33431

The 1960s and 1970s saw an explosion of talent by American women singer-songwriters, from folk, R&B, blues, jazz, pop, country, and rock, including Joni Mitchel, Joan Baez, Aretha Franklin, Carole King, Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Janis Ian, Carly Simon, Dolly Parton, Patti Smith, Emmylou Harris, and others. While some women singer-songwriters wrote or sang songs that presented women in older stereotypical roles, such as in "Stop in the Name of Love" or "It's My Party," others' songs reflected changing attitudes by and about women, songs that reflect women's strength and independence in relationships, such as 'It's too late" or "You're so Vain," or that reflect social issues, such as "At Seventeen" or "Society's Child." In a live music-spiced examination of this cultural phenomenon, singing duo Bill Bowen and Joan Friedenberg, who perform professionally as the Pink Slip Duo, retrace the steps of these women singer-songwriters. Their songs are sung in harmony-rich arrangements with lyrics projected for the audience to sing along for an educational and nostalgic journey. The program will end with a tribute to RABBI BARRY SILVER!

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Friedberg Auditorium

777 Glades Road, Boca Raton 33431

In this talk Dr. Berkowitz will provide a sweeping analysis of the historic, symbolic and political significance of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising (April – May 1943). He will contrast this event with another well known historic parallel, the heroic last stand by Jews against the overwhelmingly superior military forces of Rome, the siege of Masada (73-74 CE). Dr. Berkowitz will underscore the legacy, inspiration and contemporaneous relevance of the “resistance” in both instances to the moral imperative of rising above fear and intimidation and pushing back against escalating Jew-hatred with the same courage, leadership, passion and defiance as the Ghetto fighters.

The Rothschild family had lived in Frankfurt’s Jewish ghetto for 400 years. They earned their living by selling goods on the back of a donkey. By the mid-1800s they likely were the wealthiest family on the planet. Their enormous wealth enabled them to impact major events throughout Europe and the Middle East, including funding Wellington’s army against Napoleon, Britain’s abolition of slavery, control of the Suez Canal, and the railways in Austria and Germany.
