Zion Union Baptist Church Opens its Doors to In-Person Worship Service!


Zion Union's reopening to in-person worship services will consist of a single Sunday morning worship service - each Sunday morning -
at 10:00 AM.

The
8:00 AM and 11:00 AM Sunday worship service format has been suspended until church leadership determines it is safe to return to that level of in-person activity.

We invite you to join our worship experience and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Here are a few courtesies we would ask you to observe if attending our in-person worship service:

Please wear a properly fitting face mask upon entering the church building, for the duration of the worship service, and remove the mask only after you have exited the building.
Extra masks will be available.
Please observe social distancing courtesies. Upon arrival, please wait for an usher to seat you in the sanctuary. Please limit movement away from your seat during the service and please do not congregate in the vestibule fellowship before or after the service.
At the conclusion of the worship service, please remain seated and wait for ushers to provide you with exiting instructions.
The downstairs fellowship hall area will be closed.
Please be aware that the collection of tithes and offerings will not be conducted as usual during the worship service.
Special collection boxes have been placed at the rear of the sanctuary and we ask that you place your tithes and offerings in one of these boxes as you enter or leave the worship service.

Zaila Avant-garde becomes first African American winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee!

Whether dribbling a basketball or identifying obscure Latin or Greek roots, Zaila Avant-garde doesn’t show much stress.

The 14-year-old from Harvey, Louisiana, breezed to the championship at the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, becoming the first African American winner and only the second Black champion in the bee’s 96-year history.

Zaila has described spelling as a side hobby, although she routinely practised for seven hours a day. She is a basketball prodigy who hopes to play someday in the WNBA and holds three Guinness world records for dribbling multiple balls simultaneously.

Zaila, who just finished eighth grade, said winning the national spelling bee is just another goal she can now put on her list of accomplishments.

“I kind of thought I would never be into spelling again, but I’m also happy that I’m going to make a clean break from it,” Zaila said. “I can go out, like my Guinness world records, just leave it right there and walk off.”

Zaila twirled and leaped with excitement after spelling the winning word, “murraya”, a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees.

“He was a bit surprised by that,” she told the New York Times.
Chaitra Thummala, a 12-year-old from Frisco, Texas, was the runner-up. Zaila and Chaitra are coached by Cole Shafer-Ray, a 20-year-old Yale student who was the 2015 Scripps runner-up.

Shafer-Ray said that Zaila has a natural talent for spelling, saying that spellers at her level are usually “well-connected in the spelling community” and have been spelling for many years.
“She really just had a much different approach than any speller I’ve ever seen. She basically knew the definition of every word that we did, like pretty much verbatim,” he said. “She knew, not just the word but the story behind the word, why every letter had to be that letter and couldn’t be anything else.”

The only previous Black winner of the bee was Jody-Anne Maxwell of Jamaica in 1998. Zaila also breaks a streak dating back to 2008 during which at least one champion or co-champion was of south Asian descent.
As winner of the national competition, Zaila is taking home $50,000 in cash and prizes.

How Does Your Garden Grow? (3rd-6th)

All supplies are provided.

The experience of watching a tiny seed transform into a towering sunflower or a tasty tomato is quite magical.
In this camp, you’ll explore the science behind that magic as you dig into the basics of gardening.
You’ll learn by growing a variety of plants and conducting experiments on how environmental factors, such as soil types, affect them.
On the last day of camp, you will have your own flower and vegetable gardens to take home!

Free Drive-Thru Narcan Events

Narcan (naloxone) is a nasal spray used to treat opioid overdoses in an emergency situation.

On the third Monday of each month, BRHD hosts a free drive-thru event where community members can receive free Narcan. Individuals are trained on how to identify an overdose and how to properly administer Narcan.

As of Sunday, June 20, our church doors will reopen to in-house Sunday worship services. Services will begin at 10:00 AM in the church sanctuary with Live Streaming available to those who wish to attend virtually.

As of July 1, 2021, Smiles For Children (SFC) has expanded to provide comprehensive dental coverage for adults in full-benefit Medicaid covered groups. Dental coverage will continue for pregnant women and children. The new dental coverage for adults will focus on overall oral health, prevention, and restoration and will be similar to the coverage currently available to pregnant women. The program name will remain SFC, with a new tag line, “Improving Dental Care for Children and Adults.”

Note that dental coverage is not included for members with limited Medicaid benefits, including members in Plan First, Qualified Medicare Beneficiaries, Special Low-income Medicare Beneficiaries, Qualified Individuals, or Qualified Disabled Working Individuals.

Enhanced dental benefits offered by the Managed Care
Organizations ended June 30, 2021. 

Effective July 1, 2021, dental benefits under SMC for adults in full-benefit covered groups will include:

  • X-rays and examinations
  • Cleanings
  • Fillings
  • Root canals
  • Gum related treatment
  • Dentures
  • Tooth extractions and other oral surgeries
  • Other appropriate general services such as anesthesia.

 DentaQuest is the Medicaid dental benefits administrator (DBA) for the SFC program. They administer the dental coverage and benefits for all Medicaid and FAMIS covered members, including those enrolled in both managed care, FFS and members with special needs.

Please refer members with questions about their dental benefits to DentaQuest. A representative can be reached toll free at 1-888-912-3456. For members who use TTY/TDD, the number for SFC is 1-800-466-7566.

By calling DentaQuest, members can learn more about the new dental benefits for adults or get help finding a dentist. Members and other individuals can also visit the DentaQuest website, www.dentaquest.com.

COVID Vaccines:
Available at Local Health Departments

Beginning Monday, July 26, walk-in COVID vaccines will be available at each of our BRHD health departments. Vaccines will be offered at each office, one day every week, 9:30-11:30am and 1:00-3:30pm: 
  • Monday- Greene County Health Department
  • Tuesday- Louisa County Health Department
  • Wednesday- Fluvanna County Health Department
  • Thursday- Nelson County Health Department
  • Friday- Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department 

We will continue to provide vaccines at our J. Crew vaccine location in Fashion Square Mall and throughout the District with our mobile unit and pop-up events, in addition to homebound vaccine efforts with UVA and the Charlottesville Fire Department. 

Everyone 12 years and older is eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In addition to walk-in times, appointments can be scheduled by using our online scheduling portal, visiting vaccines.gov, or calling the BRHD hotline Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm: 434-972-6261.
July COVID Testing

While we work to vaccinate the District, BRHD continues to offer free, drive-thru COVID-19 testing. Each event will have the capacity to test 200 persons: 100 pre-registered clients and 100 walk-ins.

Individuals tested at a BRHD testing sites will receive a call within 4 days with test results. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a consenting adult.

Remember, vaccination is only one tool to end the pandemic. We need to use them all in order to return to normal day-to-day activities. Continue to wear face masks if you're not fully vaccinated, maintain physical distance, wash hands frequently and properly, and limit indoor social gatherings with those who are unvaccinated.

ADULT EDUCATION & APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS

Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC) offers Adult Education and Apprenticeship training that covers a range of technical education courses. The career and technical offerings will help lifelong learners: enhance current skills, gain new knowledge for increased job marketability, continue life-long learning, make life more enjoyable, or simply have fun. CATEC provides a positive place for post-secondary learning. Apprenticeship programs are approved by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry and provide employer sponsors and their employees with the required related technical instruction hours needed to satisfy a full Apprenticeship program.
Throughout the early part of the twentieth century, Vinegar Hill emerged as an important center of commerce for the black community of Charlottesville. 

A wide range of small scale industrial and service businesses were located in this area. In addition, many small detached homes and at least three churches occupied the area between Main Street and Preston Avenue.

Vinegar Hill was largely demolished in the mid-1960's as a part of Charlottesville's "urban renewal" campaign.
