The   was established in 1951 and is located in a historic building constructed in the 1930s in downtown Haifa. The Museum is the leading contemporary art institution in the northern part of Israel and one of the country's top ranking museums. The HMA collection has approximately 7,500 works by Israeli and international artists, reflecting a range of trends and movements in art.

"The Yearning for Myth"  is Haifa Museum of Art's newest exhibition which addresses mythological themes that appear in the work of many contemporary Israeli artists. Myth is one of the basic instruments through which art understands and expresses itself.

This new exhibition explores Israeli artists' interest in the images of the classical Greek myth and their place in Western art. Botticelli's, "The Birth of Venus", was the inspiration behind contemporary artist, Osvaldo Romberg's, "Untitled (Botticelli)" which is seen in the new installation.  Romberg sees himself as a redeemer of mythological masterpieces, seeking to develop a dialogue with their creators and original context.
