The ICAA is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a two-million dollar legacy grant from the Driehaus Foundation in memory of its late founder Richard H. Driehaus, which will establish The Richard H. Driehaus Curricula for the Built Environment Endowment Fund. This grant, the single largest that the ICAA has ever received, is a living legacy to the late Richard Driehaus, who was a longtime supporter of the ICAA, serving on its board and helping to grow its robust educational programs. The grant was announced at ICAA’s 42nd annual Arthur Ross Awards Dinner and Ceremony recognizing excellence in the classical tradition in New York City on Monday, May 8th.

The awards were jointly presented by ICAA Board Chair Russell Windham and ICAA Board Member Suzanne Tucker.

Women and Black architects have contributed significantly to architecture in the nineteenth century in all styles from Beaux Arts through Art Deco and International Style. As minorities within the profession of architecture they achieved projects both nationally and internationally with great odds working against them.

From J. Louise Blanchard and Marion Lucy Mahoney to Sophia G. Hayden and Julia Morgan, women have taken second place in noting their achievements and have taken a back seat to the male architects. Black architects, such as Robert Robinson Taylor and Paul Revere Williams, have also made significant achievements in architecture without notoriety. In this recent lecture, Robert Arthur King, FAIA focuses on both Black and female architects who were born in the 19th century and their contributions and achievements in the architectural profession.
