A Word from the Pastor

August 23, 2024

Each year, we are blessed to have a member of a missionary congregation come to our parish and give us the opportunity to support the Church’s missionary efforts. This weekend we welcome Sr. Selvi Raj, SSpS of the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters. Sr. Selvi is from the Congregational Province in Mexico.

The SSpS Sisters are an international missionary congregation serving in over 50 countries of the world, primarily in rural and poor areas and frontier situations: addressing the needs of the people through education, health care, and socio-pastoral ministry.

Sr. Selvi will share about the work and ministries of the Sisters in Mexico where they serve different vulnerable groups in Oaxaca City, Pachuca, Hildalgo, Salto de Aqua, Chiapas, and Mexico City.  Their focus is on supporting vulnerable families, children, the elderly and sick; women affected by human trafficking, prostitution, migrants, and so forth.

Through our prayerful accompaniment and generous financial support, the mission of Christ to “go, teach, and proclaim the Gospel to all people” will continue through the work and ministry of these dedicated Sisters.

There will be a special second collection for the work of the Sisters. Put your envelope in the collection basket.

For more information on the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters, their history and ministry in more than 50 countries of the world, visit their websites: www.ssps-usa.org and www.worldssps.org

St. Patrick Parish has always been very generous to our visiting missionaries. Thank you again for your support.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

Meals for Our Priests

Please pray for Carl Nishihiri, the cook for our parish priests. Carl has served our priests for many years and is quite sick at the moment. He will not return to us for a while.

In the meantime, we are looking for parishioners who might make a meal for the priests and drop it off at the parish office. If you would like to do that, call the parish office to find out what dates are available. Our office staff can help you with the details.

From your parish priests: Thank you very much!

Suscipe of St. Ignatius

St. Ignatius Loyola composed a beautiful prayer often referred to as his Suscipe (Latin for “receive”). The prayer has been set to music by Fr. John Foley of the St. Louis Jesuits and is entitled “Take Lord Receive.” Reflect on its beautiful message.

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

(OCIA) is a formation process which leads adults into full communion with the Catholic Church. It begins in September and culminates with the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil (April 19, 2025). The sessions are held every Sunday (except holiday weekends) after the 9:00 am Mass.

Who should enroll in this?

  • Those who have not been baptized and want to be Catholic
  • Those who were baptized in another Christian denomination and now wish to become Catholic
  • Adults who never celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation

All of these people form a community that learns and grows together in the faith as they journey together. While it includes information and learning about the teachings of the Church, it also aims to help the participants grow in faith, become more prayerful and experience Christian community. Participating in the 9:00 am Mass prior to the Sunday sessions is an important part of this formation and is an expectation for participants.

To enroll for OCIA, send an email to: rmbagley@yahoo.com

Fr. Ron will reply to set up a personal interview. If you have questions, contact Fr. Ron at the parish 760-729-2866 x309

Gospel Reading

John 6:60-69

Simon Peter confesses his faith that Jesus alone has the words of the eternal life.

Background on the Gospel Reading

For our Gospel today we hear the conclusion of the “Bread of Life discourse” in the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel. In the preceding verses, which we have heard proclaimed in our liturgy over the past few weeks, we have heard Jesus explain that he is the Bread of Life, given so that those who believe may have eternal life. This discourse follows the miracle in which Jesus fed more than five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish. As Jesus has been teaching these things, John’s Gospel describes a murmuring crowd unable to accept Jesus’ words. In today’s Gospel, the crowd has dwindled in number, and John no longer references them, or the Jews. Instead John describes the questioning of those considered to be Jesus’ own disciples.

Today’s Gospel first records the response of those in the crowd who are described as Jesus’ disciples. Just as the larger crowd had struggled with Jesus’ teaching, these disciples also cannot accept Jesus’ words. Jesus is said to know about their murmuring. He responds by acknowledging their unbelief and by reiterating that only those chosen by the Father will follow Jesus to the end. John’s Gospel reports that many of those who had been Jesus’ disciples ceased to follow him at this point. The number of people following Jesus dwindled from a crowd of more than 5,000 to only 12 people. And it is to these Twelve that Jesus now turns his attention.

Simon Peter’s response to Jesus’ question as to whether those closest to him will also leave, reminds us of the reports of Peter’s confession of faith in the Synoptic Gospels. Peter announces, on behalf of all the Twelve, that they have come to believe all that Jesus has taught about himself: Jesus is the one from God in whom they have found the path to eternal life.

This conclusion of the Bread of Life discourse focuses on personal faith in the life of Christian discipleship. Each person must make his or her own judgment about who Jesus is and in doing so determine the way of life that he or she will follow. God’s grace invites us to be Jesus’ disciples, but each person must respond to the grace of God and confess as his or her own the belief that Jesus is the one from God. This faith then commits us to the path of life, leading us to eternal life.
